Like a lot of readers, I set some reading goals each year. Now that we’ve passed that halfway mark of 2024, I thought it was time for a 2024 reading goals update.
How has my reading year been so far? Am I on track to meet my goals? Keep on reading to find out!
So far I really can’t complain about my reading year. I’ve really discovered physically reading while listening along with the audiobook. It speeds up my reading and really adds to the whole experience. I wanted to track how often I did this, so my boyfriend added this to my reading spreadsheet. The light purple indicates what I’ve read together with the audiobook. As you can see, I’ve been doing this quite often (56 books were read physically with the audiobooks). Now let’s look at my goals.
Goodreads Challenge
It’s safe to say that my Goodreads challenge hasn’t been a problem for me. I had it set at 100 books and after 6 months I’ve read 176 books. My reading speed has picked up a lot this year and this definitely started with reading together with the audiobook. That really speeds up my reading. If I keep going like this, I may just hit 300 books at the end of the year.
Netgalley Feedback Ratio
So at the end of 2023, I had a feedback ratio of 32% (108 approved/35 sent). In the last six months I’ve increased my ration by 7% while also being approved for another 27 titles. I don’t know if I’ll get 60%, but I’m going to do my best.
Physical TBR/Backlist Books
Reading my own physical books is one of my biggest reading goals and this year I want 50% of my reading to be from my shelves. Looking at this now, I’ve read 83 of my own physical books (5 volumes of manga I read digitally and 3 hardcovers came from the boyfriend’s shelves), so that’s 49.4%. That means I’m really close to my goal halfway through the year. I didn’t really set a goal specifically for backlist books, but I’ve been trying to read at least 3 a month. At the end of June I’ve read 39 books that were on my shelves before 2024. That’s almost half of the physical books I’ve read!
Completing Series
My goal is to complete at least 12 series in 2024! So far I’ve finished 8 series. That’s actually surprising. I didn’t think I had gotten this far. Hopefully this means I’ll finish more than 12 before the year is over.
Catch Up on Some Backlists
If I’m honest, I completely forgot about this goal and I can say it’s one I haven’t even tried completing. Hopefully I can catch up with at least one of these author’s backlist (mentioned in the original goals post) before the end of the year.
Read Authors I Haven’t Read, But Own Multiple Books By Them
Another goal I don’t think I’ve worked on yet. I did just put The Serpent King by Jeff Zentner in my booksleeve to read during my commute. So hopefully I’ll start tackling this goal more throughout the rest of the year.
Last year I also tracked how many big books (books with 500+pages) I read. I do want to talk about, because it’s something I do still keep an eye on. In 2023 I read 18 books that were 500+ pages. In 2024 I’ve read 12 and we’re only 6 months into the year. Will I set my record for big books this year?
So that’s my update so far! I’m definitely doing well with some goals, but need to concentrate on a few others the rest of the year. Did you give yourself any goals at the beginning of the year? How are they going? Let me know in the comments. I’d love to hear from you.
I love that you have a spreadsheet! You’re doing very well.
I also just completely failed at reading backlist books, lol. Here’s my reading goals update! https://lainahastoomuchsparetime.wordpress.com/2024/06/07/a-casual-mid-year-reading-update/
