Review | This Is Why We Lied – Karin Slaughter

Last week I was looking for a new audiobook and to my very pleasant surprise I saw the newest Karin Slaughter was already released. I adore her books and as soon as it releases I read the new Will Trent every year. So of course I started the audiobook right away and just a day later I finished the whole thing haha. And today I wanted to share my thoughts on the book, so let’s dive in!

Review | This Is Why We Lied – Karin Slaughter

The next thrilling suspense featuring Will Trent and Sara Linton from Karin Slaughter, New York Times bestselling author of Pretty Girls and After That Night!
Everyone here is a liar, but only one of us is a killer…
A secluded cabin retreat

For GBI investigator Will Trent and medical examiner Sara Linton, McAlpine Lodge seems like the ideal getaway to celebrate their honeymoon. Set on a gorgeous, off-the-grid mountaintop property, it’s the perfect place to unplug and reconnect. Until a bone-chilling scream cuts through the night.
A murderer in their midst
Mercy McAlpine, the manager of the Lodge, is dead. With a vicious storm raging and the one access road to the property washed out, the murderer must be someone on the mountain. But as Will and Sara investigate the McAlpine family and the other guests, they realize that everyone here is lying….Lying about their past. Lying to their family. Lying to themselves.
Who killed Mercy McAlpine?
It soon becomes clear that normal rules don’t apply at McAlpine Lodge, and Will and Sara are going to have to watch their step at every turn. Trapped on the resort, they must untangle a decades-old web of secrets to discover what happened to Mercy. And with the killer poised to strike again, the trip of a lifetime becomes a race against the clock…

I’m a big fan of Karin Slaughter’s writing in general and her Will Trent (and Grant County) series in particular. Every year I look forward to the newest release and like I said, this year it was suddenly here. I listened to the audiobook in record speed and finished it in 2 days.

Karin Slaughter’s books are always pretty brutal and have at least one gruesome element to them. This book isn’t any different in that regard. It wasn’t as brutal as I’ve seen from Karin Slaughter but there was a twist that made it pretty gruesome. I wasn’t surprised at all but I was a good twist for sure!

Pretty early on I was thinking about the possible killer and was debating what the writer would think the reader would think. Do you still follow me haha? I figured it must be someone you don’t expect and I actually predicted the right killer! The motive wasn’t what I suspected at first but I don’t think anyone would guess that haha. I did really like it though!

The characters are still great to read about and I enjoyed this read a lot! Like I said, I finished it super quickly and I wish I had another release ready to go right away. I would recommend this one for sure! If you haven’t read any Karin Slaughter yet, this probably isn’t the one to start your journey with but otherwise you definitely should get to this one!
