Looking Back at Our Bookhaul | August 2019

As booklovers we both love buying books. That got us thinking… do we actually read the books we buy? That’s how this Looking Back at Our Bookhauls idea got started. It can be quite interesting to see what we’ve actually read and can make you run to your shelves to pick up the books you forgot about. Today let’s look back at our haul from August 2019! How did we do?

Candyce

I remember that in August 2019  I had quite a few books added to my collection. I’m afraid to look and see how many I’ve read, but I have to! In August 2019 a total of 13 books were added to my shelves. Let’s take a look at how many I actually read.

Stolen Songbird – Danielle L. Jensen

A friend of ours is a big fan of this author and if I’m honest, Stolen Songbird sounds really interesting. I was going to buddy read this book with a friend, but we’ve gotten distracted by a lot of books. Oops!

The Bridge Kingdom – Danielle L. Jensen

I actually only recently read The Bridge Kingdom, but I’m happy I did. Even though I still don’t completely understand the whole concept of the bridge and some aspects of this world I really enjoyed this story. The sequel is has been in the world a few days, so I need to get my hands on it!

Read

The Screaming Staircase & The Whispering Skull – Jonathan Stroud

These two books were on my TBR for last Fall, but I never got around to them (oops!). I will definitely have to add them to my TBR this October. It seems like the perfect time to read these.

Unread

Vow of Thieves – Mary E. Pearson

I was going to participate in a buddyread last August, but got very distracted (like I have with so many books). This author writes amazing books and I’ve heard nothing but amazing things about this duology. Hopefully I can get them on my TBR before the end of the year.

Unread

Red, White and Royal Blue – Casey McQuiston

Since I bought Red, White and Royal Blue I’ve read it twice. This has become one of my favorites and I know I’ll be rereading it again in the future. I’m excited for the new book by Casey McQuiston releasing next year.

Read

The Unhoneymooners – Christina Lauren

The Unhoneymooners was so much fun! Enemies to lovers is one of my favorites tropes and I laughed out loud frequently. The ending was a little disappointing, but all in all, such a fun read!

Read

The Simple Wild – K.A. Tucker

Yet again another book I’ve wanted to read forever, but just haven’t gotten around to, haha. The Simple Wild sounds like a book right up my alley, but I need to make time for it. Hopefully I will soon!

Read

Gideon the Ninth – Tamsyn Muir

Gideon the Ninth was a book I was really looking forward to. I mean the story sounded amazing and just look at that cover! Unfortunately, I did not enjoy this one at all. I was confused and missed a lot of world building and character development. This one just wasn’t for me.

Read

Shadowblack, Charmcaster & Soulbinder – Sebastien de Castell

The Christmas before this haul, I received Spellslinger with sprayed edges. So when I ran into these, I needed to make sure that I got all of them. Since this haul I’ve now completed the collection with sprayed edges, but haven’t read a single book in this series yet, haha. That will change, because a few friends have said amazing things about this series and author.

Unread

We Hunt the Flame – Hafsah Faizal

Another case of this was for a buddyread, but just didn’t have time in the end, haha. I’ve heard some mixed reviews about We Hunt the Flame, but I’m really curious. The sequel has been announced as well and another stunning cover.

Isabelle

I’m always a bit scared to open that bookhaul from a year ago. What did I buy around that time and did I actually read any of it? I got 7 new books in August 2019 and I saw a couple of books I totally forgot about haha. Let’s take a look!

Heartstopper Volume 2 – Alice Oseman
Read

I read and loved this one! It was one of my favourite reads of 2019 and I already read the sequel as well. This graphic novel series is so wholesome while also tackling important issues. I truly hope we get a ton more in this series!

City of Brass & Kingdom of Copper – S.A. Chakraborty
Unread

I can’t believe I still haven’t read this series. As soon as I got these two volumes I bought them with me on my vacation. But I didn’t end up reading them and now I still haven’t. In the mean time Candyce did read this series and she absolutely loved it so I really plan on picking them up soon.

Hocus Pocus and the All New Sequel – A.W. Jantha
Unread

I totally forgot I got this one! This is a Halloween read and I planned on reading it last Halloween. I ended up watching the movie for the first time last year and really enjoyed it. So hopefully this year I will actually read this one! Candyce told me it was a fast read so I might be able to fit it in this October.

Kill the Queen – Jennifer Estep
Unread

I had also forgotten about this one! Which is a shame because I heard great things about it. There are a lot of positive reviews and the second and third book are already out. I think this might be a really enjoyable read for me and I would love to read more adult fantasy.

Fruits Basket Collector’s Edition 2 – Natsuki Takaya
Read

I really enjoy Fruits Basket and I can’t believe it’s been a year since I bought this volume. At this moment I don’t have any unread volumes but I did put volume 3 on my wishlist. I love the story and the characters and plan on continuing the anime soon as well!

Gideon the Ninth – Tamsyn Muir
Unread

I did start reading Gideon the Ninth with Candyce but I stranded somewhere in the first couple of chapters. Candyce was very disappointed by this book so I haven’t had the urge to pick it back up yet. Maybe I’ll enjoy it more because some of our friends did love it. I do plan on reading it as some point, the second book just released so it would be nice to read multiple books in this series if I do like it.
