I know it says Bookish Item, and then I put movies in the title but hear me out haha. After doing the Harry Potter books ranking, I also wanted to do a movie ranking. And it seems weird to not have that as a bookish item after that last post. As you might have read in my latest Royal Update, I watched all of the Harry Potter movies and realized I may not have watched all of them before. While it seems unlikely that I didn’t devour the movies like I did the books, there were so many scenes I didn’t recognize that I’m pretty sure I didn’t watch movie 3 through 8 before last week. I really feel like watching them all over again now but I’ll first give you my ranking of the movies!
Obviously there will once again be spoilers
8. Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire
This must be a surprise after my books ranking. But I think it’s because I love the book so much that I was disappointed. The fourth book has some of my absolute favorite scenes of the whole franchise and they didn’t make it into the movie! I couldn’t believe my eyes and while I still really enjoyed the movie it has to take 8th place.
7. Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets
This was actually harder to choose than the books! Possibly because I watched the movies once and read the books a million times. Chamber of Secrets is my least favorite book but I do think they did a great job with the adaptation. It’s very true to the book, something I really appreciate. But since its my least favorite book, the movie can’t be much higher.
6. Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince
The scene after Dumbledore dies, with all the wands lighting up is an amazing scene, it’s super well done and I loved it. However, it doesn’t make up for all the things that were missing! Or added (this is the one that has the burning Burrow right? What was that all about?!). I really missed some of the memories Dumbledore collected, they were such an important part. Or the way Harry got that memory Snape didn’t want him to see. Harry and Ginny’s relationship was also a bit different from what I wanted to see.
5. Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows – Part 2
This was a pretty good movie over all! I just really disliked that weird end with Voldemort. Oh, and having Fred die off screen didn’t sit right with me, it’s the death I’m most upset about and I kinda wanted to see it! I also really missed Teddy Lupin. All in all it was a great ending to the series though.
4. Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows – Part 1
I really enjoyed this one! It stayed pretty true to the books since they had more time to work with and I really wish they cut book 4 in half as well haha. Still hoping for a tv show at some point. I was pretty okay with the things they changed (for the most part at least) and I loved the whole Gringotts part. Also, while I hate Bellatrix, Helena Bonham Carter did such an amazing job that I love every scene with her.
3. Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix
This is one of my least favorite books in the series but I actually really enjoyed the movie! What annoyed me most about the book is Harry, he’s super unlikable in this installment and he bugs me so much. However, he was a lot less annoying in the movie. Dolores Umbridge is despicable but it was great seeing her on the screen. And I loved the fight between Dumbledore and Voldemort. I am super mad about missing all of the Quidditch in this one though!
2. Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone
Whenever I think of the Harry Potter movies, I think of this one (might be because it was the only one I had seen multiple times haha). This is such a nostalgic one and it gives me a very warm feeling inside. You get a look at so many of the classes and I wish that was included more in the later movies. The music is amazing and they created the perfect atmosphere.
1.Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban
My second favorite book but probably my favorite movie! Like with The Philosopher’s Stone, I love that we get to see some classes to truly get a feeling of being at Hogwarts. I also enjoyed seeing some of Hogsmeade. It’s unfortunate that they changed some things but I did like some of the small changes they made surrounding the time travel in the last bit. My babies are growing up in this one but are still slightly innocent, and that innocence doesn’t survive the next movie 😉
I’ll have to say this ranking is less set in stone than the book ranking. After making this list I really want to rewatch all the movies and the ranking might change after that, who knows. I think this was also more difficult than the book ranking! How would you rank the 8 movies? Tell me in the comments!
I agree that Goblet of Fire was the worst film – too much was either cut or changed. Every time I see Order of the Phoenix I like it more. Great post 🙂
I’m laughing because Goblet of Fire is my favorite HP movie (but to be fair I’ve never read the HP series past the 3rd book)
I was thinking: huhhh she did a post on this already right? But that was about the books, lol. Pay attention Melissa!! Interesting list!! I’m not sure what my list would look like but I think that I’d go with Goblet of Fire as #1, although I really like your choice for Prizoner of Azkaban, that one’s really good as well!
