Review| Everything She Does Is Magic – Bridget Morrissey

It’s October, so that means spooky and witchy reads. I love a cozy fantasy and Everything She Does Is Magic fits this and a witchy read. Today I want to tell you about this book and what I thought.

A big thank you to Netgalley and Delacorte Romance for providing me with an eARC to read and review. This doesn’t affect my opinion in any way!

In the charming town of Fableview, every day is Halloween. Get ready to fall under the spell of this bewitching sapphic romance, perfect for fans of Gilmore Girls and Wicked!

Darcy Keller, resident ray of sunshine and town spirit princess, loves every moment of Fableview’s fall festivities. But she’s also really ready to leave for college next year, even though her parents expect her to stay and take over their Halloween empire.

Enter brooding new girl Anya Doyle, a real-life witch and almost a full member of her coven. In order to be initiated, she has to choose a mortal ally to act as her “protector.” But having moved around so much, Anya is completely friendless. So she does what any self-respecting teenage almost-witch would—she lies and tells her coven her secret crush, Darcy, is willing to do the job.

Desperate to solve their personal problems, they agree to help each other out, attending everything from a costume parade to a pumpkin patch party to an apple bobbing contest together. But with Anya’s magical powers and Darcy’s future independence on the line, the last thing they need is the added complication of pesky feelings . . .

Review

Bridget Morrissey has written contemporary romances that I really enjoyed, so I was excited to read a YA book by her. Everything She Does Is Magic is the perfect read for this time of year and has put me in a Halloween mood. This book is the perfect combination of cozy, magical, funny, romantic, and coming of age.

Darcy only know Fableview. Most people who live here stay here for life, but she wants to know what’s out there besides this town. College is something she wants to do, but how does he tell her parents who expect her to take over their shop and town’s activities? It’s not easy growing up and telling your parents you want something else isn’t easy.

Anya is the new girl in town and a witch. Her family has children move around while they’re growing up to train with different family members. To join her coven, she has to find a mortal to be her protector. Which isn’t easy when you’re shy and have moved around so much in life. But can she really handle being banished from her family if she doesn’t find someone in time? Anya really cares about her family, but just doesn’t know how to find a protector. She’s shy and it isn’t easy to make friends. Especially when you try and be friends with someone you have a crush on.

I have to say I’d love to move Fableview. A town where Halloween is celebrated throughout the year and even feels magical? Yes, please! Everything She Does With Magic is also a big story in finding yourself and dealing with friendships and romantic relationships. I loved seeing Darcy try to put her own mark on the fall festivities and Anya trying to figure out what to do while they got closer.

I will say I would’ve loved just a bit more about the witches in town and even Anya’s coven. I feel like this part of the book could’ve used just a bit of extra time to make this fully witchy to me! All in all, I had a great time with these two characters and small town.

Everything She Does Is Magic was a great start to spooky season! I wouldn’t mind reading more books set in Fableview. Have you read any witchy reads this year? Let me know in the comments. I’d love to hear from you.
