Another year is flying by and we’re now over halfway through 2023. I’ve been seeing the Mid Year Freak Out Tag everywhere and it had me wanting to do this tag again myself. So it’s time to take a look at the past six months of reading! So let’s give it another go.
Best Book You’ve Read So Far
This is a hard questions every year! I’ve read 126 books in 2023 as I’m typing this. Out of the 126 books I’ve read 55 of them have been 5 star reads. So it’s so hard. I’ll choose two though I’ve talked about a lot. Before I Let Go was such an intense and emotional story, but an amazing one at that. Also, Fourth Wing was Rebecca Yarros’ fantasy debut and met my expectations and then some.
Best Sequel You’ve Read So Far
Last year the book I said was my favorite was Delilah Green Doesn’t Care. So it’s kind of fitting that the best sequel so far this year is Astrid Parker Doesn’t Fail. Ashley Herring Blake really knows how to pull on your heartstrings and make you fall in love with her characters.
New Release You Haven’t Read Yet, But Want To
This is honestly such a long list, haha. 2023 has been filled with so many releases that sound amazing. It’s just so hard to keep up. Lynn Painter is one of my favorite authors and I’m shocked I haven’t read The Love Wager yet. After reading Accidentally Amy last month, I’ve decided I really need to read it soon!
Most Anticipated Release for the Second Half of the Year
I recently did a Top Ten Tuesday about my most anticipated releases for the second half of the year, but that never covers all of them. Two I didn’t talk about here, but I’m really excited about are The Long Game and Two Twisted Crowns. I have eARCs of both of these and hope to read them soon.
Biggest Disappointment
In the last year and a half I’ve started reading dark romance. Haunting Adeline is a book that’s well loved in this category, so I decided to give it a go. I don’t DNF a book quickly, but at 35% I just couldn’t do it anymore. The most interesting aspect of the story was the main character’s grandmother’s story.
Biggest Surprise
Things We Never Got Over is a very hyped and very well loved book. It did sound like a book for me and it was. Wow! It’s close to 600 pages and it didn’t even feel like that. I loved the small town, the characters, and the romance. I need to read Things We Hide From the Light soon, because the third book releases in September.
Favorite New Author (Debut or New to You)
I read The Confidence of Wildflowers and The Resurrection of Wildflowers last month and now I want to read everything Micalea Smeltzer has written! She has quite the backlist, but that actually makes me really happy.
Newest Fictional Crush
There have been quite a few new additions to my book boyfriend list this year, but my newest fictional crush is August from Unfortunately Yours! He was such a protective character and so sensitive. You should just read the book and find out for yourself!
Newest Favorite Character
One of my most recent reads was Everyone in My Family Has Killed Someone and the main character Ernest, was an interesting one. I loved the way he told us the story. It was such an interesting take on a mystery.
Book That Made You Cry
The Seven Year Slip was the last book to make me cry! Besides a romance in this story it does deal with grief. Ashley Poston really knows how to hit you in all the feels while reading about Clementine.
Favorite Book to Film Adaptation You’ve Seen This Year
I actually don’t have a favorite book to film adaptation to talk about yet. There are a few I still have to watch like The Summer I Turned Pretty and Daisy Jones and the Six. I’m a bit behind with those.
Most Beautiful Book You’ve Bought or Received This Year
I have to say a lot of books I’ve added to my collection this year are really beautiful and I also have a few pretty Illumicrate editions I love, but the one I want to talk about today is my edition of Tress of the Emerald Sea. It’s just a normal hardcover, but the end pages are stunning!
What Book(s) Do You Need to Read by the End of the Year
There are so many books I want to read before the end of the year. A few I’m determined to finally read are A Court of Silver Flames, The Crown of Gilded Bones (and get caught up with the rest of the series), and Things We Hide From the Light.
So that’s my Mid Year Freak Out Tag for 2023. I forgot how much of a challenge some of these questions are, haha. What has been your favorite read so far? Or your biggest surprise? Let me know in the comments. I’d love to hear from you.
