We wanted to do another bookish meme on Wednesday and after doing Can’t Wait Wednesday a few times we decided that would be a fun one to bring around more often! About twice a month you’ll see this meme on our blog.
Can’t Wait Wednesday is a weekly meme hosted by Wishful Endings, to spotlight and discuss the books we’re excited about that we have yet to read. Generally they’re books that have yet to be released. It’s based on Waiting on Wednesday, hosted by Jill at Breaking the Spine.
A lonely shopkeeper takes it upon herself to solve a murder in the most peculiar way in this captivating mystery by Jesse Q. Sutanto, bestselling author of Dial A for Aunties.
Vera Wong is a lonely little old lady–ah, lady of a certain age–who lives above her forgotten tea shop in the middle of San Francisco’s Chinatown. Despite living alone, Vera is not needy, oh no. She likes nothing more than sipping on a good cup of Wulong and doing some healthy detective work on the Internet about what her Gen-Z son is up to.
Then one morning, Vera trudges downstairs to find a curious thing–a dead man in the middle of her tea shop. In his outstretched hand, a flash drive. Vera doesn’t know what comes over her, but after calling the cops like any good citizen would, she sort of . . . swipes the flash drive from the body and tucks it safely into the pocket of her apron. Why? Because Vera is sure she would do a better job than the police possibly could, because nobody sniffs out a wrongdoing quite like a suspicious Chinese mother with time on her hands. Vera knows the killer will be back for the flash drive; all she has to do is watch the increasing number of customers at her shop and figure out which one among them is the killer.
What Vera does not expect is to form friendships with her customers and start to care for each and every one of them. As a protective mother hen, will she end up having to give one of her newfound chicks to the police?
I’ve mentioned this one in my TTT anticipated releases for the first half of 2023 post but I just had to dedicate another post to it. Jesse Q Sutanto’s Aunties series is high on my wishlist, I have heard wonderful things and think I will really enjoy those books. So when I saw another release by Jesse I was curious right away. And after reading the synopsis I just knew I wanted to read it.
This book sounds so good! And I think it will be really funny as well. We have a senior main character and there just aren’t enough of those. This also seems to be a bit of a cosy mystery and I loved those a lot. Also, I love that Vera will develop relationships with all the possible suspects and I can’t wait to find out what will happen.
Is this book on your radar? And have you added it to Goodreads? Or have you read an eARC? I can’t wait to hear another opinion and I hope more people are excited for this book! Please let me know in the comments.
The Aunties books are so much fun! I hope you will read them. I really want to read this one as well!
