We’ve been wanting to start the Mistborn series for a really long time now and we have finally started! The Final Empire is the first book in this series and we were finally able to both finish this book. Did we enjoy it? Keep on reading to find out!
The Mists rule the night.
The Lord Ruler owns the world.
Once, a hero arose to save the world. A young man with a mysterious heritage courageously challenged the darkness that strangled the land.
For a thousand years since, the world has been a wasteland of ash and mist ruled by the immortal emperor known as the Lord Ruler. Every revolt has failed miserably.
Yet somehow, hope survives. Hope that dares to dream of ending the empire and even the Lord Ruler himself. A new kind of uprising is being planned, one built around the ultimate caper, one that depends on the cunning of a brilliant criminal mastermind and the determination of an unlikely heroine, a street urchin who must learn to master Allomancy, the power of a Mistborn.
“Our belief is often strongest when it should be weakest. That is the nature of hope.”
Candyce I actually grabbed my boyfriend’s copy of this book to read. I love the darker colors on this one, but if I’m honest, I really love the other version of this cover. The blue, white, gray and black fit this series well. And I love when covers don’t have people on the covers!
Isabelle I got a boxed edition of the series with this cover. And I have to agree with Candyce, I like the other covers better haha. I do own some of the other Brandon Sanderson books in those covers. But I don’t really mind these darker covers. I quite like the colors on it!
“There is beauty in compassion, but one must learn wisdom too.”
Candyce After hearing my boyfriend talk about this book and how much he loved it, I have to say I was really curious. This sounded like a series I would love, but it just took me awhile to finally pick it up. Yet again, this was a book where I ask myself why it took me so long to read it. It is clear that this is an adult series though, because I wasn’t finished with this one as fast as other fantasy books.
I loved the world Brandon Sanderson created. It was described in such a way that I could imagine where the characters were and what the surroundings looked like. This world is darker and that shows. We get to learn a lot about the politics and current situation. I don’t want to say too much, because I really believe this is something you need to experience while reading. On top of an amazing world, the magic system is amazing and I’ve never read anything like it. Metals play such a big part and how they work is so interesting.
And then the characters. It’s a group of people that are far from perfect, but they’re family whether they want to admit it or not. The crew Vin and Kelsier (more about them soon) work with may all have their flaws, but they all have each other’s backs. They had me laughing and I loved reading about them and their pasts.
Vin hasn’t had an easy life and doesn’t dare get close to anyone. She’s never really felt loved and the attention her brother gave her was far from loving. Everybody leaves in her eyes, so Vin knows she can’t get close or be disappointed. Out of all of the characters, she changes the most. I loved seeing her learn about what she can do and act in a world she knows nothing about. Vin is such a strong character and starts believing in herself and I loved that! I can’t wait to see what she does in the next two books.
Kelsier is the mastermind of everything. He seems really arrogant and full of himself, but there is so much more to his character. As the story continues we get more glimpses of him and his past. The fact that there were many chapters from his POV was really helpful. He takes on too much at times, but he just really wants to fight the evil in their world. No matter the cost, but that does come back and haunt him in many ways. Then again, Kelsier is always a few steps further than people expect of him!
Another character that I loved and really hope we learn more about is Sazed. He collects information and history can do so much more then he lets on. He made me laugh and want to hug him so many times. Sazed is loyal to his people and is another character I couldn’t get enough of. What I also loved about this book is that family, justice and fighting for what you believe in was more important than romance. There was a little romance, but it didn’t take over the story. That was very refreshing!
And Vin liked solitude. When you’re alone, no one can betray you.
Isabelle I’ve been hearing about this series for years and years and it just seemed like one of those series you have to have read. Since I love fantasy I put this one on my wishlist without knowing what it’s about. I got the boxset about two years ago and have some things since then. But for the most I went in pretty blind.
I liked the Brandon Sanderson book I read so far and was happy to hear Candyce wanted to do a buddy read for this one with me. It’s nice to read a big book like this together and make a bit of a schedule for it. I had a very hard time keeping up with the schedule though, at first I couldn’t really read that many pages at once. It took me quite a while to get into the pace of the story.
I’m used to reading YA fantasy and those books tend to be quite fast-paced. Every now and then I come across a slower paced book and I usually like them a lot as you get more world-building and character development. However, it’s still different from adult fantasy! There wasn’t that much action in the first half or so of the book. We did get good world-building but I really had to get used to the pace of the story. Once I hit about the half way point though, I finished it in two days haha.
I enjoyed this world a lot. Brandon Sanderson created a really cool magic system and a very well developed world. There are different races of people, there is a lot of politics, some history and religion and like I said a very cool magic system. It was really cool learning about the different metals and what they did along Vin and I can’t wait to read more about it in the next novels.
The plot is a bit slower paced. You could say this is a bit of a heist story and for once the planning and preparation took a while. I think the whole story takes place over a year or so and the gang was busy with the grand scheme throughout that time. It was fun learning more about the characters and the world through the preparation and all the ups and downs that came with it!
And then we have the wonderful characters! Vin and Kelsier are our main characters and I truly loved and appreciated both of them. They are very different characters but equally important to the story. Vin is a young girl just discovering her powers while Kelsier is older and has a lot of life experience. Where Vin is insecure, Kelsier is quite arrogant but they’re both lovable and strong.
I liked the whole gang and all of their individual stories but my favorite was probably Sazed! He had such an interesting background and he is extremely loyal. I also liked the nobles we got to know! They were not quite what they seemed at first and I enjoyed reading about the balls a lot.
It’s going to be so interesting to see where the second book takes us. I loved the little parts each chapter opened with and I hope we get something similar in the sequel. While I have some theories as to what will happen next, I try not to look into it so I can be surprised once again. For now, I would recommend all fantasy lovers to pick up this book!
“In the end, I worry that my arrogance shall destroy us all.”
Why did it take us so long to finish this book?!? We’ll definitely continue reading this series along with the Cosmerealong. It will take a bit longer for the reviews for the next books to come online, but we can’t wait to continue this amazing series. Have you read this one yet? Let us know in the comments!
