Looking Back At Our Bookhauls | December 2018

We’re looking back at bookhaul from December 2018 today. December is Christmas, so you can imagine the hauls were quite big that month haha. Now the biggest question is, did we actually read those books in the year since that haul? Let’s take a look at this month’s looking back at our bookhauls!

Before even sitting down to write this post, I knew that it wouldn’t look good for me, haha. In December 2018, I added a total of 19 books to my collection. This post is going to be me telling you about all the books I haven’t read yet, haha. So let’s take a look!

Archenemies – Marissa Meyer

This is a trilogy I haven’t started yet. I actually just got the third and final book, so 2020 must be the year of Renegades, haha. People I know love this series and I’m sure I’m going to be mad I didn’t start it any sooner!

City of Ghosts – Victoria Schwab

V.E. Schwab is quickly becoming a favorite author of mine. City of Ghosts was actually a book I started the day after receiving it. This was such an interesting middle grade story. The sequel was gifted to me for Christmas, so I will be picking it up quickly.

The Reckoning of Noah Shaw – Michelle Hodkin

I’m still determined to re-read the Mara Dyer trilogy before picking up this spinoff. The third book in this trilogy hasn’t been released yet, so I have awhile to catch up before I can binge all three books in a row.

These Vicious Masks – Tarun Shanker & Kelly Zekas

Yet again another book I haven’t picked up. I’m still really excited for this one though! Seeing this book again really makes me want to read so many backlist books on my shelves.

The Storyteller – Traci Chee

Out of all the books on the list, I’m most surprised about this one. The Reader is such a good and unique book, so this needs to be a priority. I think I need a re-read of the first book before starting the second and then this final book in the trilogy!

The Lady’s Guide to Petticoats and Piracy – Mackenzi Lee

Another book I’m so excited about reading. The author actually announced there will be a third book in this series coming out later in 2020. I guess that’s a sign I need to hurry up and get reading.

Queen of Air and Darkness – Cassandra Clare

Yay! Finally another book that I’ve read. Even though I kind of cheated with this one, haha. I was almost done reading the e-book when I got the physical copy. I am really happy to have this on my shelf though, because not only is it an amazing book, but the illusrations inside are gorgeous!

What If It’s Us – Becky Albertalli & Adam Silvera

I don’t know why I keep forgetting about this book, but I know I’ll get around to it. Isabelle read it a little while ago and enjoyed it. So I think I will as well.

A Poison Dark and Drowning – Jessica Cluess

This is actually the sequel in this trilogy that I haven’t started yet. As I’ve said before, I’m never quite sure why I haven’t picked up certain books, because they still all sound really good to me. Maybe this year will finally let me do some catching up.

The Caged Queen – Kristen Ciccarelli

This trilogy has beautiful covers and the author was so sweet. The third and final book in this trilogy actually released a couple of months ago. They’re all standalones, but are in the same world. And there are dragons, need I say more?!?

A Study in Charlotte, The Last of August & The Case for Jamies – Brittany Cavallaro

I’ve actually read the first book in this series, but it’s been awhile. I definitely plan on doing a reread before I continue the series. The fourth and final book in the series was under the tree for Christmas, so I can finish this one!

Beneath the Citadel – Destiny Soria

Beneath the Citadel was actually one of my first 2019 reads! I really enjoyed this story and was a little sad it was a standalone. Even though at times it’s nice to be done with a story after finishing one book!

Skyward – Brandon Sanderson

The sequel came out a couple of months ago and is a book I now own. I’m still debating whether or not I’ll save the books until they’re all out or start them in 2020. At the moment I’m reading the first book in the Mistborn series and am loving this author’s writing.

One Day in December – Josie Silver

I read this book shortly after receiving it and One Day in December is a good winter read. While I didn’t agree with everything in this story, I loved that we saw ten years of these characters’ lives and everything that happened.

Odd One Out – Nic Stone

Odd One Out was on my list, because I still wasn’t sure if I’d be going to YALFest last year. I didn’t go and haven’t read this book yet. So far the people I know have given Odd One Out mixed reviews, so I am curious to see if I’ll enjoy it or not.

Wundersmith – Jessica Townsend

Wundersmith was so good!! I really love Morrigan and the world this book takes place in. The third book was actually just delayed, so I have to wait a little longer before I can enjoy more of Morrigan’s adventures. If you’re looking for a new middle grade series to start, I really recommend this one!

The Magic Misfits: The Second Story – Neil Patrick Harris

I loved the first book in this series, but just haven’t gotten around to the sequel yet. These books aren’t that long, so I know once I sit down with it, I will be done before the day is over. Neil Patrick Harris created fun characters and I can’t wait to continue with their adventures.

Read: 6/19 – 32%
Unread: 13/19 – 68%

I added 21 books to my collection in the last haul of 2018! It was an insane haul and after I glanced at it quickly, I knew I was in trouble, haha. I can already tell you I didn’t read all of these books and I’m ashamed haha.

Moonstruck vol. 1 Magic to Brew – Grace Ellis & Shae Beagle

I did read Moonstruck! Unfortunately it wasn’t as good as I hoped it would me. I loved the art and the setting but the story wasn’t great. And the interactions between some of the characters really bugged me. I did plan on picking up the second volume but it hasn’t gotten great reviews from some of my friends so I have been putting it off.

The Surface Breaks – Louise O’Neill

This is one of the prettiest books I own but I still haven’t read it yet. The reviews on this are all over the place. Some of my friends loved it, others hated it and I’m scared to read it now haha. I’m still thinking about Louise’s Only Ever Yours and I was so sad after I finished that one.

Wildcard – Marie Lu

I was pleasantly surprised by Warcross and got Wildcard pretty soon after the release date. It has a gorgeous naked hardback, like Warcross has. This one didn’t get the best reviews and I think I have been putting it off ever since. It’s pretty stupid and I know after reading this I can at least cross a series of my list. So hopefully I do pick it up this year!

The Grisha Trilogy – Leigh Bardugo

I already read the Grisha trilogy but then I found this gorgeous set for less than €10. It’s nice to own this set and I also reread the whole series with this set. I really enjoy this world and I loved getting all the details sharp before reading King of Scars. And also, look how pretty they are! So shiny.

Red Sister – Mark Lawrence

I’m not sure why I haven’t read this yet as I’m pretty sure I will love it. This year I want to focus more on all the adult fantasy books I have on my shelves, so I do plan on picking it up soon. Everyone seems to love it and the whole series is complete now so I can read all three books if I do love this one.

The Ancient Magus’ Bride 1 – Kore Yamazaki

This was such a fun manga! I really want to continue reading this series but I’m trying not to read a ton of different manga at the same time. So I’m getting caught up on a couple of series first, after that there’s a big chance I will pick up the sequels to this one!

Space Boy 1 – Stephen McCranie

A super cute graphic novel! I really enjoyed it and do plan on getting the next couple of volumes in this series. After I’m caught up on Saga, I think this is the only sci-fi GN I’m reading so I simply need to continue haha.

The Night Circus – Erin Morgenstern

I have been wanting to read this one for so long! And I still haven’t picked it up. If I’m being honest, it might be a while haha. I do really hope I love it and since I am trying to read more backlist books this year, it might just happen 😉

A Thousand Perfect Notes – C.G. Drews

I can’t believe I haven’t read this one yet! Cait is one of my favorite bloggers and I admire her so much. I think the biggest reason I haven’t read it yet is because this isn’t my favorite genre and I’m scared to be disappointed and I don’t want to be disappointed!

The Promised Neverland 3 – Kaiu Shirai

Read it and loved it! I read 5 volumes in this manga series and own number 6. This is one of the manga series I’m trying to get caught up on. It’s also one of my absolute favorite mangas so I read them pretty soon after getting them 😉

The Cheerleaders – Kara Thomas

I really liked Kara’s Little Monsters so I should pick this one up soon! Also, I don’t own that many YA mystery/thrillers at the moment so as soon as I’m in the mood for one this should be the one I pick up. I really like the cover and I have pretty high hopes!

Phobos 3 – Victor Dixen

The first two books were super quick reads so I’m pretty mad I haven’t read this one yet. It’s such a fun sci-fi series. I have read sci-fi books that are a lot better but this is just fun and fast and easy to read. It feels pretty contemporary in a space setting. Definitely recommend this series!

Fables Vol. 3 : Storybook Love – Bill Willingham

I finally read this one pretty recently! It’s a really fun fantasy graphic novel series. I especially love the setting and I do plan on collecting the whole series. It’s a bit of a commitment since there are over 20 volumes but it is a completed series.

Reaper at the Gates – Sabaa Tahir

This is the Dutch version of Reaper at the Gates. I read the first two books in Dutch so I like to continue this way. Unfortunately a lot of people were disappointed by this third book in the series and that made me a bit hesitant. I do plan on reading it at least before the fourth book is released!

War Storm – Victoria Aveyard

This is the last book in the Red Queen series and since I haven’t read the third book yet I couldn’t read this one either. I did read the first couple of pages of King’s Cage and I hope to read both of these books this year. Red Queen was a favorite book of mine and I would love to see how this story wraps up.

The Backstagers Vol 1 – James Tynion IV

Yay, one I did read! I really liked this graphic novel and I would like to continue with the series. This is not a series I necessarily need to own physically but I would like to read more about these characters. Especially the setting is really cool.

The Fifth Season – N.K. Jemisin

Another one for my adult fantasy TBR. I have heard so many good things about this one and I’m very excited to finally read it. May 2020 be the year I pick up all of my adult fantasy. We can at least dream right?

Dead Until Dark – Charlaine Harris

I watched the first episode of the True Blood tv show ages ago and ever since I planned on reading the books first. Last year I finally got the first book and I’m happy to say I also read it. Now I just have to collect the rest of the series in the matching covers and I’m good to go!

Give the Dark My Love – Beth Revis

I’m super sad I haven’t read this one yet! When I received it, I did read and liked the first couple of chapters. But I ended up putting it aside in favor of something else and have yet to pick it up. This post does make me want to do that soon though!

Read: 10/21 – 48%
Unread: 11/21 – 52%

So that’s it for this Looking Back at Our Bookhaul and it’s definitely bigger being December. If you’ve read any of the books we haven’t read yet, what books do we need to start first?

  2. Wow – so many great hauls! I liked Odd One Out, but I see why there might have been mixed reviews, for sure. Also, I have Mark Lawrence, really anything by him, on my TBR…

    1. We both had a great haul, if only we read those books haha. Yes I have a couple of Mark Lawrence books on my TBR, hopefully I love his writing or a have a bunch of books to unhaul haha

  3. So many good books! And I am loving all the graphic novels. And don’t worry about not reading them all – I’m sure they will only stare out at you sadly from the bookshelves wondering why you don’t love them….
