Bookhaul | December 2019

HAPPY NEW YEAR! Our last 2019 Bookhaul is here. This is so weird to write down haha. December is usually one of our most crazy bookhaul months with all the Christmas gifts. Was that the case this year? Let’s take a look at our December bookhaul!

Candyce

December was a month I added a lot of books to my collection. I seriously only have about half a bookshelf left to fill, haha. I added a total of 27 books to my collection this month. Out of the 27 books, I only bought 7 myself, so that’s not too bad. The first three you already saw in our Secret Santa unboxing. I’ll talk about the rest here.

This year I participated in a small swap with the TBR & Beyond mod group. I received two books from that.

Serpent & Dove – Shelby Mahurin

I actually started the e-book, but got distracted by other books. I’ve heard so many amazing things though that I knew I needed the physical book. On top of that it’s so pretty. I love having this on my shelf now.

The Gilded Wolves – Roshani Chokshi

It’s surprising I haven’t added this one to my shelf yet. I needed it now though, because Netgalley granted my wish for the ARC of the sequel. Another gorgeous hardcover book. This seems to be a book with mixed opinions, so I hope I end up loving it.

Now for my Christmas haul. My boyfriend, mother and I always do Christmas gifts and have a nice budget per person. It helps that most of the books I put on my wishlist weren’t that expensive, because I ended up with 15 books Christmas morning.

Tunnel of Bones – V.E. Schwab

City of Ghosts was a book I got last year and loved it! So it only made sense to add this one for now. I definitely plan on picking it up soon. Once again, I really love the cover. They match really well together.

Serious Moonlight – Jenn Bennett

As a contemporary lover, I’ve heard this author’s name many times, but have only read one of her books. This needed to change and it now can with Serious Moonlight. I really love this version of the cover!

Contagion – Erin Bowman

My first experience with a YA horror went well, so I want to try a few more. A few friends of mine have read this book and really enjoyed it! The sequel is already available, so at least I know I can continue if I love Contagion.

Heart of Iron – Ashley Poston

I’ve heard really amazing things about this book. It’s one that’s been on my list for awhile, but finally made the cut, haha. This author wrote Geekerella and I hope I love this one just as much at that one.

The Burning Shadow – Jennifer L. Armentrout

Last year I read an ARC of the first book in this trilogy and couldn’t wait for the sequel. The Burning Shadow has been available for a couple of months now and I’m happy to own it. Now I just need to decide if I’ll read it soon or wait until it’s closer to the release date of the third book!

Sweet Black Waves – Kristina Perez

A few of my friends have read this book and loved every minute of it. That definitely made me curious, so I need to give it a go. Also, I’m normally not a fan of people on covers, but I do enjoy this one.

A Question of Holmes – Britanny Cavallaro

This is the fourth and final book in the Charlotte Holmes series. I own the first three (even if I’ve only read the first one). After really enjoying the first one, I can now complete the series. These books aren’t that big, so it shouldn’t take long to read all four.

Now Entering Addamsville – Francesca Zappia

After loving Eliza and Her Monsters, I’ve been patiently awaiting for this author to give us a new book. Now Entering Addamsville sounds like a book I’m going to love and look how stunning it is! I hope to read this one at the beginning of 2020.

The Wizards of Once – Cressida Cowell

I keep saying this, but I really do want to read more middle grade books. I’ve added quite a few to my shelves, so it’s time to actually sit down and enjoy them all. I know the third book was released a few months ago, so I hope I end up loving this one. The illustrations are definitely pretty!

Supernova – Marissa Meyer

The third in final book in the Renegades trilogy is now here and I haven’t read the first one yet. I guess I can binge them in one go now, haha. I really do like these covers though and am curious about the storyline!

Honor Among Thieves – Rachel Caine & Ann Aguirre

Honor Among Thieves is another book that I’ve seen around quite often and people seem to enjoy. I do enjoy sci-fi, so it was definitely time to add more to my collection. The third book is set to publish next year, so I have time to read this and the sequel.

We Set the Dark on Fire – Tehlor Kay Mejia

Ever since I saw the cover of this book I knew I needed it! And I finally own it. I have to say it’s not as big as I expected. A lot of people love this one, so I’m excited. The cover for the sequel is just as stunning, so I really hope I like this one.

Loki: Where Mischief Lies – Mackenzi Lee

I love that this author is writing a YA series with Marvel characters. My boyfriend is a big fan of Marvel and I’ve really come to enjoy the movies. Loki is an interesting character and I’m excited to read a book about him. The book looks stunning!

Starsight – Brandon Sanderson

Skyward was released last year and even though I haven’t read it yet, I really wanted to add Starsight to my list. Sanderson doesn’t write tiny books, so I’ll definitely enjoy them for a bit. After reading Mistborn, I may just need to pick up these two books.

Little Moments of Love – Catana Chetwynd

This was actually a surprise that wasn’t on my wishlist. I’ve been following Catana Comics for awhile now and love it! The little comics are simple, but so relatable. They always leave a smile on my face. I hope she decides to keep up with these for quite awhile.

So that’s my Christmas haul and I really thought that would be the last of the books I collected in December. That wasn’t the case though, because two days after Christmas I went to the bookstore with a good friend and my boyfriend. I left the store with 7 books. Oops!

The Kingdom – Jess Rothenberg

I have to admit this is kind of a cover buy. This cover is stunning and the story does sound interesting. A few people I know have read it and did enjoy it. The Kingdom wasn’t their favorite book, but it was fun.

Queenslayer – Sebastien de Castell

Queenslayer is the fifth book in the Spellslinger series and I haven’t read any of them. That being said, I now own the first five with sprayed edges. They’re too pretty to resist and I really think I’ll like this series. I only have one more book to go that was only recently released.

Thunderhead &The Toll – Neal Shusterman

I read Scythe quite awhile ago and loved the story! There’s really nothing like it. The third and final book was just released, so I decided to get it at the same time as the sequel. I’ve heard many people say the second book ends with a cliffhanger, so I’ve been waiting for the last book to be available.

Blood Heir – Amelie Wen Zhao

Blood Heir was a book that stirred up some controversy before its release. The author even ended up postponing the release to change some things. People I know that have read it really enjoyed the book, so I needed it. On top of that it’s a January group read in TBR & Beyond.

The Beautiful – Renee Ahdieh

I’m ashamed to say I received a digital ARC of this and haven’t finished it yet. I’ve read around 23% and have been enjoying myself. This book is just too pretty to resist. And I do love holding a physical book over anything. I’ll get back to this one ASAP.

The Deathless Girls – Kiran Millwood Hargrave

In all honesty, this book wasn’t on my radar at all. Not until a friend of mine bought it and I saw how pretty it was. She showed me the cover and the first page and I was sold. I recently saw the hardcover as well and it’s just a really stunning book. Hopefully the story is just as amazing!

Isabelle

This December was a lot less crazy than the last couple of years! I usually ask for a ton of books for Christmas but with my insane TBR I tried to focus more on other gifts haha. Of course I still got quite some books so let dive in.

Saga vol. 5&6 – Brian K. Vaughan

I have the complete series now! Or at least, all the volumes that have been released up to date. I will definitely read all of them in 2020 so I can start the long wait with everyone else haha. This is a wonderful graphic novel series and I’m glad I used my Christmas giftcard from work for it.

Fence vol. 3 – C.S. Pacat

Another amazing graphic novel series! I can’t believe it took me this long to get the third volume. This was actually the first book I got with my Christmas giftcard haha. There was no way I wouldn’t get it and it will be one of the first books I read in 2020.

Witch Hat Atelier 1 – Kamome Shirahama

This one had been on my wishlist for a while and I’m so happy I finally got it. The cover looked so cute and there are already a couple of volumes out. This was another Christmas giftcard buy haha.

The Promised Neverland 5 – Kaiu Shirai

One of my absolute favorite manga series! While this is a MG series, it so brutal. I definitely wasn’t expecting that when I got the first book haha. This was my last pick to get with my Christmas giftcard. I made great use of that giftcard and I love everything I got.

Scythe – Neal Shusterman

This was a book I got in my Secret Santa Swap! It has been on my wishlist for a couple of years now and I’m so glad I finally got it. I want to read more sci-fi in 2020 and this one will definitely be read. Candyce loved this one and I have high expectations!

Skyward – Brandon Sanderson

This was the other book I got in the Secret Santa Swap. I have a lot of Brandon Sanderson books to read and I hope to get to a couple of them this year. His books all of wonderful premises and I’m excited about every single one of them. But this one has what I think it my favorite cover out of all of them!

The Dark Vault – V.E. Schwab

I only got two books for Christmas, but I was extremely happy with them! One of them was this bindup of the books in The Archived series. Unfortunately this series has never been finished but I’m happy that my V.E. Schwab collection is almost complete now. I’m excited to finally start reading these books and I will probably regret it as soon as I finish the second book haha.

Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire – J.K. Rowling – Illustrated Edition

And this was the second book I got! I’m super happy with it, I’ve got all four illustrated editions now and I can’t wait for the next one to be released. This one is stunning and I can’t believe the detail that went into it. I adore these editions so much and I’m already looking forward to reading them all this way. The Goblet of Fire might be my favorite HP book so I was super excited to see this one.

So these are the books we added to our collections in December! If you’ve read any of these, let us know what you thought in the comments.Which books do we need to read first?
