Bookhaul | October 2019

The holidays are getting closer and closer (which means it’s time for us to buy less, so we have plenty left to add to our Christmas wishlists). So did we stick to this or did we end up adding way too much to our collections again? Keep reading our October bookhaul to find out!

Candyce

This month didn’t go well when it comes to adding books to my collection! I added a total of 13 books to my shelves this month! Three of them I actually bought this summer, but didn’t have them until now. A friend of mine took them to RARE and had them signed for me. I already wrote a post about those and you can see that one here. Also, I will be adding one graphic novel I got in September and forgot about (oops). Out of the 13 books I got, four were received as gifts! So let’s take a look.

Monstress Vol. 1 – Marjorie M. Liu

This graphic novel is the one I bought in September and forgot about, haha. Isabelle has read it and loved it as well as a few other friends. I love the art work and even though it seems darker, I’m really curious about it! There are four volumes now, so if I really love it, I can keep on going!

Night of Cake & Puppets – Laini Taylor

I’ve wanted this novella/companion book in the Daughter of Smoke and Bone trilogy for awhile, but haven’t gotten around to it. A good friend of mine surprised me with this book a couple of weeks ago along with a couple of really cute Harry Potter bookmarks! She really surprised me with this and it was so sweet! I need to finish the third book now and then dive in here!

American Royals – Katharine McGee

I went to the bookstore with my mother this month after we went and got lunch together. When we got there she told me to pick one out (it ended up being two, see the next book in this list), but she made me very happy! American Royals is a book I’ve been looking forward to (I still have the ARC to read, oops). This paperback is also so pretty, because it has pink sprayed edges. I can’t wait to read it!

The Places I’ve Cried in Public – Holly Bourne

This is the second book I got from my mother that day. I had recently seen this one online and loved the cover. This one also has really pretty sprayed pages. I know this book is going to be an emotional one, but it sounds so good!!

Into the Crooked Place – Alexandra Christo

During the same trip to the bookstore, I saw Into the Crooked Place and couldn’t resist. I actually like this UK cover better than the US one. It’s the perfect time of year for a book like this, so hopefully I can read it before the end of the year!

Bad for You – J. Daniels

Bad For You was actually a book I bought this summer to go along to RARE. Unfortunately the author had to cancel for personal reasons (of course, family comes first). I’m still happy with this book though. I read an ARC before the release and it’s so good! I definitely recommend this series!!

King of the Republic – P.J. Berman

King of the Republic was the last book gifted to me this month! I received his first book as an ARC as well and this is the sequel. The author ran a giveaway for signed ARCs of his second book and I was a lucky winner! I’m normally not lucky with these things, so I’m very excited!

Wayward Son – Rainbow Rowell

Carry On was a favorite of mine and I was sad that it was a standalone. So when the author announced it was going to be a trilogy, Wayward Son went on my TBR right away. I’m happy to say I was able to get the Waterstones edition and it’s so pretty. I plan on doing a reread of Fangirl and Carry On before reading this one!

Isabelle

Like Candyce, I didn’t do a great job this month haha. And knowing that Christmas is around the corner with always more books this year is once again going to end with a bigger TBR than it started with… I added 11 new books this month, of which I only read 2 yet. Oops!

Wayward Son – Rainbow Rowell

Of course I had to get Wayward Son! I loved Carry On and the moment I saw this gorgeous Waterstones edition I knew I had to get it. Like Candyce I want to do a reread of Fangirl and Carry On first, and I hope to do it in the coming month. The title for the next book is already revealed and I’m super excited to dive in!

Ninth House – Leigh Bardugo

How gorgeous is this edition? It’s the Waterstones exclusive edition and it’s also signed. I’m a big Leigh Barudugo fangirl and I’m super excited to dive into this one. There are a ton of trigger warnings for this adult dark fantasy book so be aware of that. Also, Candyce totally forgot to add this one to her haul because we ordered these together haha.

Tunnel of Bones – Victoria Schwab

I already listened to the audiobook for Tunnel of Bones last month but since we were meeting Victoria, I decided to buy the book right away. And Victoria signed it that day. We did a whole post about that day, I loved meeting Victoria. I would highly recommend these books and I can’t wait for the next one!

Blackbird vol 1 – Sam Humphries & Jen Bartel

I got this one at Forbidden Planet in New York. Blackbird has been on my wishlist for quite a while but if I’m being honest, I have no clue what this one is about. I love the look of the cover and I think I’m just going to jump in blind.

Death Note Black Edition Vol 2 – Tsugumi Ohba

I really enjoyed the first volume of Death Note so I decided to get this second volume at Forbidden Planet as well. It took me a while to finally pick the first volume up but once I did, I flew through it. This is such an interesting story and I’m happy I’ve got quite some volumes to go.

The Last Wish – Andrzej Sapkowski

I bought The Last Wish at the Strand Bookstore in NY! Wow, that store is huge! I just didn’t know where to start and could’ve strolled around there for hours haha. Anyways, the Witcher tv show is almost here and I need to start the books before that. I finally can do that now.

The Martian – Andy Weir

This one has been at my wishlist forever so when I saw it for a great price at the Strand, I decided to finally go for it. I don’t read that much sci-fi but do really enjoy it whenever I do read it. Also, the father of one of my best friends recommended this to me, so I finally got a copy haha.

The Golden Compass – Philip Pullman

Another one that has been on my TBR forever! And another one where the tv show is coming soonish haha. So I finally got a copy, also because the Strand had it for a good price. And because I liked this cover! I’m really excited to finally read this series and hope I love it as much as everyone seems to do.

Sawkill Girls – Claire Legrand

The last bookstore I went to in New York was Books of Wonder. This bookstore is all about YA, MG and children books and they have a lot of signed books! I loved browsing the shelves and found some great books. One of them was this signed copy of Sawkill Girls. Once again, I’m not to sure what this one is about but I do remember I wanted to read it haha.

The Beautiful – RenĂ©e Ahdieh

I received an eARC for this one and really enjoyed it. You can expect a review soon! So when I saw the signed copies at Books of Wonder, I knew I had to get it. It was quite pricey compared to what I usually pay for hardcovers online, but since it was signed and it would be a souvenir from NY I decided it was worth it!

Five Dark Fates – Kendare Blake

And the last book I got this month! I somehow didn’t preorder this one, or buy a copy. Even though this is one of my favorite series and I was super excited for this finale. But, once I got to Books of Wonder I was so happy I didn’t! Because they had this signed first edition and of course there was no doubt in my mind to get that. Super happy to have this in my collection, now I just have to continue reading this series, even though I’m scared for the end haha.

These are the beautiful books we got this month! We’re not going to end the year on a good note with all our book buying hahaha. But we’re still very happy with all of these! Did you get any of these or have you read any of them? Come talk to us in the comments!
