Review| An Unexpected Kind of Love – Hayden Stone

As a romance lover the first thing that caught me eye was the title of An Unexpected Kind of Love. Then I have to say I really enjoyed the cover. When I saw that one of the main characters owned a book store I have to say I was curious. I finally got around to reading this book and want to tell you about it today! Keep on reading to find out more!

Bookstore owner Aubrey Barnes likes his quiet, orderly London life, thank you very much. His shop may be struggling, his only employee is a menace, and his plumbing is one creaky pipe away from disaster, but he can handle it. Maybe. He cannot, however, handle the film company that’s thrown his Soho street into chaos.

And he definitely can’t handle the charismatic American actor Blake Sinclair.

Which is why he’s extremely reluctant to lease out his shop as a set for Blake’s film, but it’s his one opportunity to save his business. Now he can’t get away from the distractingly hot actor.

Then Aubrey finds himself alone with Blake in a trailer, and what happens next turns London’s heat wave into an inferno that leaves him breathless.

Aubrey is not cut out for the high-profile life of dating a celebrity, especially an American actor who’s not even out yet. Good thing their tryst is absolutely not going anywhere.

Of course, when you expect nothing, that’s exactly when it starts to mean everything.

Review

An Unexpected Kind of Love caught my eye because of the main character owning a bookstore. Whenever a book has any bookish related plot or setting I’m all in. It was also interesting to learn that the bookshop would be used as the setting for the love interest’s movie. I love books, so tell me more!

That being said the main character wasn’t one I could connect with. Aubrey complained a lot and just seemed grumpy most of the book. Nothing is good enough and everything is bad. Him meeting Blake changed that a bit for him, but in the end he was never a very likable character for me. Blake had the potential of being a very likable character, but I don’t feel we really got to know him except for the times he’s with Aubrey. I think more moments together would’ve helped or even a few chapters from his POV. The only character I really truly loved was Aubrey’s employee Gemma. She was a lot of fun and I have to say I’d definitely read a book about her.

Then there was the romance. Let’s say things get steamy pretty early on and there were a few cute moments. There was some ex drama that I could’ve done without, because I felt that it took away from the time we had with Aubrey and Blake. That being said there were some moments that were really sweet and had me smiling. I just don’t think this book really ever went deep with their relationship. What really had them connecting and wanting to be together was kept very much on the surface during this book.

All in all, An Unexpected Kind of Love was a fast and fun read. There were a few things that left me wanting more or fell a little short for me, but it kept me entertained and that’s what counts.

An Unexpected Love was a fast and fun read. For me it would’ve been just a little bit better if I had a dual POV. That just tends to be something I need when reading a romance book. How about you? Do you prefer multiple POVs when reading? Let me know in the comments! I’d love to hear from you!
