We have been having fun with Top Ten Tuesday, so we decided we will do one every week. This bookish meme was hosted by The Broke and the Bookish, and has been going since June 2010! Since January 2018 Top Ten Tuesday is hosted by That Artsy Reader Girl.
This week’s topic is Villains. I love reading about villains, at least when they are well developed. A villain with a good backstory and interesting motivations can make the story so much better. And sometimes you just want to root for a villain ;). Sometimes it’s also debatable who you should call a villain. So let’s take a look at some of my favorite villains!

1. Sabine
Bury Our Bones in the Midnight Soil – V.E. Schwab
I would call Sabine a villain for sure. But I can imagine not everyone agreeing on that haha. If you finish the whole novel, I would definitely say she was a villain. I rooted for her in the beginning, but in the end I just couldn’t justify what she was doing.

2. the Villain
Assistant to the Villain – Hannah Nicole Maehrer
Okay, this one is debatable as well haha. I wouldn’t necessarily call the Villain in this the actual villain. But I couldn’t write this list without mentioning him. I really enjoy reading about him, this book is hilarious and I have laughed out loud so much while reading.

3. Holland
Shades of Magic – V.E. Schwab
At the start of the series I never imagined I would come to care so much about Holland! This is a ‘villain’ who has wiggled his way into my heart. Throughout the series you learn more about him and that backstory definitely helps to understand him more.

4. Alistair & Isobel
All of Us Villains – Amanda Foody & C.L. Herman
I really enjoyed this duology and these characters were a big part of that. Isobel already had a good name haha. But I also loved Alistair and Isobel as villains. Basically all the characters were villains, but for me these 2 were the best developed. I was rooting so hard for them!

5. Nezha
The Poppy War – R.F. Kuang
I know not everyone would call Nezha a villain, but you have to agree with me he started off as one in the first half of the Poppy War. Later on I started to love him and I for sure cried over him multiple times. Talk about character development!

6. Coriolanus Snow
The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes – Suzanne Collins
This is a villain I love to hate. And The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes helped me to hate him even more. While I enjoyed the movie, I think they weren’t able to really show Snow’s inner dialogue. And that was what truly showed who he was.
It isn’t exactly a top 10, but these are some of the most memorable villains for me personally! I would love to hear your thoughts on these villains and if you actually consider them villains. Let me know down below!

Yep, Snow is the ultimate villain here. He has NO soft spot at all. Okay, for a bit in the middle part of Ballad, but he turned into his villainious self not long after.

As you say there are lots of different types of villains. I quite like ones that become something else.

I really need to read the Assistant to the Villain series!
The only villain on your list I’m familiar with is, well, THE Villain. Though, honestly, the more you get to know him, the less of a villain he is.

Good point. I actually really like books that make you ask, “Who’s the REAL bad guy here?”
Happy TTT!
