When one of your favorite authors releases a new book you obviously want to read it, no matter what’s it about! Luckily this newest V.E. Schwab book, Bury Our Bones in the Midnight Soil is about toxic, lesbian vampires so I would be interested either way haha. Today I wanted to share my thoughts on this one, so let’s dive in!

From V. E. Schwab, the #1 New York Times bestselling author of The Invisible Life of Addie LaRue: a new genre-defying novel about immortality and hunger.
This is a story about hunger.1532. Santo Domingo de la Calzada.A young girl grows up wild and wily—her beauty is only outmatched by her dreams of escape. But María knows she can only ever be a prize, or a pawn, in the games played by men. When an alluring stranger offers an alternate path, María makes a desperate choice. She vows to have no regrets.
This is a story about love.1827. London.A young woman lives an idyllic but cloistered life on her family’s estate, until a moment of forbidden intimacy sees her shipped off to London. Charlotte’s tender heart and seemingly impossible wishes are swept away by an invitation from a beautiful widow—but the price of freedom is higher than she could have imagined.
This is a story about rage.2019. Boston.College was supposed to be her chance to be someone new. That’s why Alice moved halfway across the world, leaving her old life behind. But after an out-of-character one-night stand leaves her questioning her past, her present, and her future, Alice throws herself into the hunt for answers . . . and revenge.
This is a story about life—how it ends, and how it starts.

As I said, the book is about toxic, lesbian vampires and I’m pretty sure the book is set in the same world as Addie LaRue. You don’t need to read Addie LaRue beforehand, because this is a standalone but it’s nice to know! I listened to the audiobook for this one and it was really enjoyable. One of the main characters is Scottish and I loved listened to her chapters in a Scottish accent.
Bury my bones in the midnight soil, plant them shallow and water them deep, and in my place will grow a feral rose, soft red petals hiding sharp white teeth.
This is a big book at 535 pages and I would also say it’s pretty slow. Just like Addie it’s more about the characters and their journey than about an action driven plot. I personally really like that, but I can imagine that’s not everyone’s cup of tea.
There are three main characters and I would say 2 timelines. We follow Alice in present day time and we follow the other characters in everything that leads up to our time. I personally really enjoyed the different POV’s and the very different characters we had. They are all flawed in their own way and they were really fleshed out. I would say they don’t all go through that much change, or at least not that much change for good but I guess that is also part of what the story is about.
Careful. In nature, beauty is a warning. The pretty ones are often poisonous.
Some of the reviewers were critical of the way the story is broken down and how often (or not often enough) we change POV. I wasn’t too bothered by the pacing or the (lack of) change in POV, but I imagine that can be very personal and it also might depend on who your favorite character is. In my opinion this was a really great read and I enjoyed it so so much. The one note I would have is that the ending felt somewhat rushed compared to the rest of the story. However, I did really enjoy those last couple of pages and V.E. Schwab once again managed to surprise me! Bury Our Bones is for sure a book I would recommend, but you have to know what you’re going into and decide if that is your kind of story. I would love to hear if you have read this book and what you thought of it!
