After coming home from my 5-day trip I just wanted to sit on the couch and watch a fun show. I thought it was time for season 2 of Wednesday, but unfortunately we have to wait a couple more days. So I started browsing Netflix for something else and that is when I saw The Diplomat in my To Watch list. I decided to give it a go and 6 episodes later here we are!
In the midst of an international crisis, Kate Wyler, a career diplomat, lands in a high-profile job for which she is not suited, with tectonic implications for her marriage and her political future.
There are currently 2 seasons with 8 and 6 episodes. Later this year (I expect in the fall) season 3 will be released and it looks like season 4 is also already confirmed.
Before starting this show I thought it was going to be a political drama and you have to be in the mood for those, so I think that is why I had put it off basically since the release of season 1 haha. What drew me in though are the lead actors, I loved Keri Russell in The Americans (still have to finish that one though!) and Rufus Sewell plays in my favorite underrated movie Tristan + Isolde.
I was so wrong about this show! Yes, it officially is a political drama but I would say it’s also a workplace comedy. I laughed out loud so much! This show is smart, but mostly it’s funny as hell. I’m surprised my neighbours didn’t come knocking to see if I was okay, that’s how hard I was laughing. And I was also kicking my feet for sure!
The characters (thanks to the actors) have so much chemistry and after 6 episodes I’m not sure who to root for. I do know who I don’t like though haha. The show is clearly set in our time period, there is a lot of mention of actual politics going on in the world, for example the war in Ukraine is mentioned often. And there are parallels that might be more veiled, but still pretty clear. I’m really curious to see what will be mentioned in the next seasons.
For me there are 2 more episodes in this first season, and I’m sure there will be a twist coming before the end. I’m also really glad that I can immediately jump into the second season! For now I haven’t watched the teaser trailer for season 3 yet, because I’m sure I will be spoiled for a lot that will happen in season 2. I just have to be grateful to know that there will be more seasons! All in all I can say I highly recommend this show and I will be binging the rest in the coming days.
