We have been having fun with Top Ten Tuesday, so we decided we will do one every week. This bookish meme was hosted by The Broke and the Bookish, and has been going since June 2010! Since January 2018 Top Ten Tuesday is hosted by That Artsy Reader Girl.
This week’s topic is Books I Did Not Finish. I hardly ever DNF books as I always think I will come back to them or I just push through. So I’m not sure I will be able to compile a list of 10 books, but we will see how far we get!
1. Master of One – Jaida Jones & Dani Bennett
I felt really bad DNF’ing this one as I got it as an eARC. But I remember talking to Candyce about this one, and just really not liking it. It was predictable, which can be fine if you like the characters and/or the writing style. Unfortunately that was not the case for me with this book.
2. A Wicked Magic – Sasha Laurens
This was compared to The Chilling Adventures of Sabrina, a show you might know I adored. Of course I wanted to read this one! But unfortunately I just couldn’t get into it. The writing style wasn’t for me and I didn’t like the characters.
3. The Tenth Girl – Sara Faring
I should’ve know this wasn’t the book for me. It’s a historical fiction book and I thought it was a thriller. But it’s actually a horror story and while I did try to read it, it just wasn’t my kind of book. I wanted to enjoy it but I kept putting it down.
4. The Unbinding of Mary Reade – Miriam McNamara
This was another eARC, so I didn’t just DNF it without effort. Unfortunately it was another one I just didn’t care about. I was expecting to really like the characters, but that just wasn’t the case. The plot didn’t really interest me yet either.
5. One Last Stop – Casey McQuiston
This is one of those books I think I might still get back to. But so far I just could’t get into the story. I was only 10% in, but you do expect to at least be curious about the story by that mark. Since I loved Red, White, & Royal Blue I really wanted to like this one. Maybe I’ll try it again at some point.
6. The Devil and the Dark Water – Stuart Turton
This is another one that I didn’t DNF for sure. But I’ve read 27% and I don’t feel the urge to get back to the story to be honest. I would only start reading this one again to be able to say I finished it and not because I’m excited to know what happened in the story. Stuart Turton wrote one of my favorite mysteries with The Seven Deaths of Evelyn Hardcastle so I still hope to love another one of his books.
7. Eldmoor – J.P. Leather
I was excited about this one because it was about dragons, but to be honest (and I hardly ever say this) this one was written pretty badly. The writing style was basic and very predictable, it read like it was written by someone who read a lot of books and thought they could write one as well. English isn’t my first language, but the grammar in this book was awful at times.
A bit shorter than the usual list, but this is it for me today! I don’t like DNF’ing books, although I do think I should do it a bit more often. Sometimes a book just isn’t for you, not because the book is ‘bad’ but just because it isn’t your kind of book. Have you read any of these books? What did you think of the book? I would love to hear from you down below!
One Last Stop was a DNF for me. I struggled to connect with anyone in the book.

The Tenth Girl didn’t work for me either. While I enjoyed Red, White & Royal Blue, I was the other way around with One Last Stop and I think I preferred it. 🙂
