One of this year’s popular romantasy books was definitely Then the Moon Hatched. I got a copy for myself this summer but didn’t get around to reading it until recently. Yesterday I finished my read and I today I wanted to share my thoughts with you all. So let’s jump into this review!
The Creators did not expect their beloved dragons to sail skyward upon their end. To curl into balls just beyond gravity’s grip, littering the sky with tombstones. With moons. They certainly did not expect them to FALL.
As an assassin for the rebellion group Fíur du Ath, Raeve’s job is to complete orders and never get caught. When a rival bounty hunter turns her world upside down, blood spills, hearts break, and Raeve finds herself imprisoned by the Guild of Nobles—a group of powerful fae who turn her into a political statement.
Crushed by the loss of his great love, Kaan Vaegor took the head of a king and donned his melted crown. Now on a tireless quest to quell the never-ebbing ache in his chest, a clue lures him into the capitol’s high-security prison where he stumbles upon the imprisoned Raeve …
Echoes of the past race between them.
There’s more to their story than meets the eye, but some truths are too poisonous to swallow.
The bestselling phenomenon, When the Moon Hatched, is a fast-paced fantasy romance featuring an immersive, vibrant world with mysterious creatures, a unique magic system, and a love that blazes through the ages.
What a stunning cover and what a cool concept. I love reading about dragons and this sounded like a really interesting story. Because it was a pretty big book (736 pages) I decided to go the audiobook route. And for once I’m not sure if that was the best way to go for me. I think I might’ve missed some things as I wasn’t sure how the world worked and what was going on at times. It might be the book, but it might also be my experience because I was listening and maybe not completely paying attention at certain points. I think I will try and read the sequel either as an ebook or a physical book.
Overall, I did really enjoy the book and liked the story. There were some good twists I didn’t see coming. Maybe because I didn’t really read the synopsis or maybe because I just didn’t pick up on the clues through the audiobook haha. Nevertheless, I really liked being surprised by those twists. I also quite liked the characters we read about, Raeve was my favourite for sure and I’m excited to read more about her.
After rereading the synopsis, I have to admit I am a bit disappointed by the dragon part of the book. In my opinion they didn’t really play a role in the story and I would’ve liked to see more of them. I did like how they were part of the world but I think that could’ve played a bigger role in the story. A plus of the audiobook was the reading guide that came with it. It had character names and a pronunciation guide, I appreciated that a lot!
For me this was a solid read and I will definitely pick up the sequel. But for now this isn’t one of my favourite reads. I just didn’t know what was going on some of the times and I think that took away some of the enjoyment. Still, it was an interesting world, we got some good twists and I liked the characters. I would recommend this one for sure!
I read this for a book club in November and it was okay. Definitely not sure I get the hype but I’ll probably read book 2 too
