TTT #360 | Books I Read/Avoided Because of the Hype Part 2

We have been having fun with Top Ten Tuesday, so we decided we will do one every week. This bookish meme was hosted by The Broke and the Bookish, and has been going since June 2010! Since January 2018 Top Ten Tuesday is hosted by That Artsy Reader Girl.

This week’s topic is Bookish Brags (or Confessions!) and I really don’t feel like doing that. I have zero ideas for that topic unfortunately. So I decided to do a part 2 to last week’s topic; Books I Read/Avoided Because of the Hype. Candyce shared 10 books she read (or avoided) because of the hype and today I will share 10 of mine. Let’s jump in!

1. Caraval – Stephanie Garber

This is for sure one I read because of the hype. Everyone was talking about it and seemed to love it. This and the fact that there were gorgeous special covers, were enough to get me interested. Unfortunately, I didn’t really care for the book and didn’t understand the hype. I still have the other two books in the series to read, but I’m not sure when I will pick them up.

2. Fourth Wing – Rebecca Yarros

This series is everywhere! Everyone is talking about it and has been for about a year now. At first I wasn’t planning on picking it up to be honest. But after seeing one too many tiktoks about the series I decided to just dive in. And I totally understand the hype! I can’t wait for the next book in the series.

3. My Lady Jane – Cynthia Hand, Brodi Ashton & Jodi Meadows

It took me awhile to read this first book by the Lady Janies. But I remember being very pleasantly surprised. I loved this book (and the rest of the series) and laughed out loud so much while reading it. The hype is very well deserved (and go watch the show on Amazon Prime!!).

4. The House in the Cerulean Sea – T.J. Klune

A couple of years ago everyone was talking about this book, it was all over the internet and everyone seemed to love it. And I have to say, I really liked this book as well. I do understand the hype and I should read the sequel.

5. Shatter Me – Tahereh Mafi

This was a big one years ago. I think it wasn’t until like the second book that this really blew up but I might be wrong. Somehow I’m still on the fence about this one. I want to say I didn’t like it, but I also loved Aaron Warner….

6. The Cruel Prince – Holly Black

A typical YA hype series I would say. And another one that I really enjoyed! I totally get the hype and I do think this (and my love for Aaron Warner maybe) shows that I’ve always been a sucker for a morally grey character.

7. Every Heart a Doorway – Seanan McGuire

Another series everyone was talking about years ago. And I feel like this series is still pretty hyped. It might be me, but I think no one loves them as much as they did before, but we also can’t stop reading them.

8. The Bone Season – Samantha Shannon

This was another big one, everyone seemed to love it. And I just didn’t get the hype. I enjoyed the book somewhat, but I really didn’t like the ending and I never felt the urge to keep on reading the series to be honest. The next book (book five) is supposed to be released next year but I don’t think I will ever get to that one.

9. The Diviners – Libba Bray

This was a pretty big book on Youtube years ago. And I have always been interested in it. So when I finally did pick it up I was happy to love it. After seeing it mentioned over and over again, it was so nice to not be disappointed haha.

10. The Awakening – Caroline Peckham & Susanne Valenti

This is my current read! And I would say it is for sure a hyped book. I have seen it all over the internet for years now, especially with so many books in this world. So far I’m enjoying it, it isn’t the best book ever but I get why so many readers enjoy it!

For some of these I’m wondering if there was actually a hype, or if it was just all my friends reading and loving a book haha. Do you think all of these were hyped? Did you read them? And enjoy them? I would love to hear your opinions down below!

  1. Fourth Wing has a lot of hype surrounding it and I don’t think i will be reading it soon because it is not my usual go to genre. The cerulean sea- I have not really noticed the hype
