5 On My TBR| Young Adult Contemporary

As I’ve mentioned before, one of my important reading goals of 2023 is shrinking my physical TBR. Sometimes it’s hard to think of what books I still have or subjects I want to read about. So we needed a way to keep track of this. 5 On My TBR is a way of keeping track. This is a meme hosted by E from Local Bee Hunter’s Nook. Every week there’s a different prompt for five on my TBR.

This week’s topic is Happy 4 Years of #5OnMyTBR Freebie. Contemporary books (even without romance) are something I love and I have quite a few YA books that fit this category, so today I’m talking about five young adult contemporary books on my TBR. Let’s take a look!

Leah on the Offbeat – Becky Albertalli

I loved Simon vs. the Homosapiens Agenda and Leah on the Offbeat is about his best friend. Senior year brings along a lot of changes and Leah seems to be experiencing all of these. I have a feeling that this book will be filled with Leah learning a lot about herself and the people around her and maybe a little romance. I’m excited to read this one and this really is one I should’ve read already.

Happily Ever Afters – Elise Bryant

Our main character rarely sees herself in the pages of romance novels. Except when she writes her own. After starting a creative writing program she just can’t seem to find the words anymore. I’m a little afraid we get a bit of a love triangle in this one, but I’ve heard amazing things. I love when book characters are fans of books themselves.

How to Make Friends with the Dark – Kathleen Glasgow

Books that really hit you in all the feels and make you cry are something I love at times. It’s amazing when an author can make you feel everything their characters are. How to Make Friends with the Dark is going to be a rough one. Our main character is close with her mother and it seems she suddenly passes away. This is going to be a tragic story.

The Places I’ve Cried in Public – Holly Bourne

The synopsis for The Places I’ve Cried in Public doesn’t tell us much, but it seems like our main character was in a toxic relationship and starting to realize this. She visits all of the places her made her cry. I have a feeling this is going to be an emotional one to read.

Tokyo Ever After – Emiko Jean

Our main characters has never felt like she fit in. Izumi is Japanese American in a small Californian town and has been raised by her single mother. She then discovers her, until now, unknown father is the Crown Prince of Japan and she’s actually a princess. I bet her life gets turned upside down! I’ve heard amazing things about this one and I’m excited to finally read it myself.

So here are five of the young adult contemporary books on my TBR that I’m excited to read (hopefully) soon. Have you read any of these? Or do you have any other contemporary books on your TBR? Let me know in the comments. I’d love to hear from you!
