After I read The Dead Romantics by Ashley Poston, I was so excited to get my hands on Ashley’s next adult romance. So as soon as The Seven Year Slip was announced, I was very excited. When Berkley reached out to see if I wanted to be on the blog tour for this book, I couldn’t resists. Today is my stop on this tour and I want to tell you all about this book and what I thought!
A big thank you to Berkley and Netgalley for providing me with an eARC to read and review.
Sometimes, the worst day of your life happens, and you have to figure out how to live after it.
So Clementine forms a plan to keep her heart safe: stay busy, work hard, find someone decent to love, and try to remember to chase the moon. The last one is silly and obviously metaphorical, but her aunt always told her that you needed at least one big dream to keep going. And for the last year, that plan has gone off without a hitch. Mostly. The love part is hard because she doesn’t want to get too close to anyone—she isn’t sure her heart can take it.
And then she finds a strange man standing in the kitchen of her late aunt’s apartment. A man with kind eyes and a Southern drawl and a taste for lemon pies. The kind of man that, before it all, she would’ve fallen head-over-heels for. And she might again.
Except, he exists in the past. Seven years ago, to be exact. And she, quite literally, lives seven years in his future.
Her aunt always said the apartment was a pinch in time, a place where moments blended together like watercolors. And Clementine knows that if she lets her heart fall, she’ll be doomed.
After all, love is never a matter of time—but a matter of timing.
An overworked book publicist with a perfectly planned future hits a snag when she falls in love with her temporary roommate…only to discover he lives seven years in the past, in this witty and wise new novel from the New York Times bestselling author of The Dead Romantics.
Review
I’ve been trying to write this review for a few days, but it’s hard to put into words how much I loved The Seven Year Slip. I didn’t think this author would give me a book better than The Dead Romantics, but I was wrong. The Seven Year Slip is definitely getting a spot on my list of top reads of 2023.
This is the first time I’ve read a romance that has an apartment that can travel in time. Clementine never believed her aunt’s stories about the apartment being magical until she experienced it for herself. Iwan and Clementine slowly getting to know each other (in more settings than one, but I can’t say too much without spoiling the story). The connection is there and I loved that it was more of a slow burn than anything. Their banter and time together was just everything I didn’t know I needed.
What I loved even more though is that The Seven Year Slip isn’t just about romance. Our main character is dealing with the loss of her aunt and finding out what she really wants. The same with Iwan. Is this career path everything he expected? Add in Clementine’s amazing best friends and I was sold. I really hope Ashley Poston writes more adult romance. I could talk about this one a lot more, but it’s a book you need to experience.
Ashley Poston did it again with The Seven Year Slip! I really hope Ashley announces her next adult romance soon. Have you read anything by this author? Let me know in the comments. I’d love to hear from you.
Great review. I’m excited to read this after all the good feedback on it.
