I love graphic novels, but I don’t read nearly as many as I would like to. Pumpkinheads released in August and it seemed like the perfect October read. Earlier this month, I needed something fast and easy and this was the first thing I thought of. I read Pumpkinheads in one sitting, so I’d say that says something about what I thought of this story!
Deja and Josiah are seasonal best friends.
Every autumn, all through high school, they’ve worked together at the best pumpkin patch in the whole wide world. (Not many people know that the best pumpkin patch in the whole wide world is in Omaha, Nebraska, but it definitely is.) They say good-bye every Halloween, and they’re reunited every September 1.
But this Halloween is different—Josiah and Deja are finally seniors, and this is their last season at the pumpkin patch. Their last shift together. Their last good-bye.
Josiah’s ready to spend the whole night feeling melancholy about it. Deja isn’t ready to let him. She’s got a plan: What if—instead of moping and the usual slinging lima beans down at the Succotash Hut—they went out with a bang? They could see all the sights! Taste all the snacks! And Josiah could finally talk to that cute girl he’s been mooning over for three years . . .
What if their last shift was an adventure?
Review
“…I’m your friend. And friends don’t let friends live small lives.”
Pumpkinheads is everything I need when it comes to a fast and fun read. This story put me in a Halloween/Fall mood and I definitely felt very cozy while reading it. The artwork is perfect for this cute story and I wish I had a pumpkin patch here to go and visit.
Deja and Josiah have worked at the pumpkin patch together the last few years and it’s their final night before going off to college. Things won’t be the same after this and Josiah is feeling sentimental. He’s had a crush on a girl for quite a few years, but has never acted on it. Deja is determined to have a fun last night. Instead of staying where they’re supposed to be, what if they finally go and experience everything this place has to offer that they missed while working. If Josiah can speak to the girl he’s been crushing on, that will just be an added bonus!
“But we could be the outside-of-the-patch friends, too. We could be friends for all seasons.’
‘You mean we could get together, and, like, recreationally make succotash?”
I loved the Deja and Josiah’s friendship. They were really fun together and I loved going on this adventure with them. We got to see everything this place had to offer and I completey understood why they came back every year to work here. I get that romance was an element in this story, but I would’ve been happy with just the adventure and fun they have. It did show us that the characters realize not everything is as it seems and sometimes things are right in front of you and you don’t even know it!
This review will be pretty short, but so is the story! I don’t want to give too much away. All I can say is that if you want a cute Fall/Halloween story, definitely pick up Pumpkinheads!
This definitely makes me want to pick up some more stories like this very soon! If you know any cute holiday related graphic novels, please let me know in the comments!
My whole family has been looking forward to reading this! I’m saving it for St. Nikolaus Day. Thanks for the sneak peak!
