Megan Lally wrote one of my favorite YA thrillers (That’s Not My Name) and I’ll be reading everything she writes. Her newest thriller is What We Did to Survive and perfect for this time of year. It’ll definitely make you think twice about going sailing. Keep on reading to find out more about the book and what I thought!
A big thank you to Netgalley and Sourcebooks Fire for providing me with an eARC to read and review. This doesn’t affect my opinion in any way.
A vacation in paradise turns deadly when four teens’ sailing charter hits stormy seas in this propulsive new thriller from New York Times and USA Today bestselling author Megan Lally!
Hannah is having an incredible spring break. A week at a resort in Mexico with her best friend Emmy and her family is perfect for de-stressing from senior year, even if it’s awkward being around Emmy’s older brother, Jackson, who she’s had a crush on for as long as she can remember.
Still, the beach is gorgeous. So is the guy they meet in the surf. Except Hannah is now the third wheel in Emmy’s vacation romance.
Eager to impress Emmy, her wealthy new boyfriend charters a private sailboat to make the most of their last day in paradise, and Hannah and Jackson are invited along. As the clouds roll in and the skies darken, their boat is the only one leaving the marina. And the further they get into open water, the more unsettled Hannah becomes. A storm is brewing onboard that’s as deadly as the one racing toward them. Forget surviving graduation. Who will make it back to land alive?
Review
Megan Lally writes YA thrillers that I tend to love and that was no different with What We Did to Survive. Thrillers are always tricky when it comes to writing reviews, because I always feel like you should know as little as possible going into a story like this. Discovering the story and twists all on your own is something that feels necessary in this genre.
The tension and suspense is something that Megan Lally knows how to capture very well in every setting she’s written a thriller in so far. I can tell you that the idea of going sailing at all isn’t very appealing after reading this. Out of all of the thrillers Megan Lally has written, this one wasn’t my favorite, but is definitely still worth the read.
We definitely get a case of teenagers being teenagers and even though I guessed the twist at the end, I was still shocked to get it right. What I love about Megan Lally’s thrillers is that they keep you on the edge of the seat even if you see certain things coming. Her writing is addicting and paced well! Maybe don’t read this book while on a boat though. I can’t wait to see what she writes next!

Once again we get a YA thriller from this author that is written in such a way, you just can’t put it down. I can’t wait to see what she writes next. Have you read any thrillers recently that you loved? Let me know in the comments. I’d love to hear from you!
