We have been having fun with Top Ten Tuesday, so we decided we will do one every week. This bookish meme was hosted by The Broke and the Bookish, and has been going since June 2010! Since January 2018 Top Ten Tuesday is hosted by That Artsy Reader Girl.
This week’s topic is Modern Books You Think Will Be Classics In The Future. A really interesting topic, but also a difficult one! I’m not sure I can think of 10 books that will fit this topic, but I’m going to try my best. So let’s jump in!

The Hunger Games – Suzanne Collins
I feel like this one is already really close to being a modern classic. So many readers have read this series and so many non-readers know the story thanks to the movies. I feel like readers will want to pick up the series for years and years to come and I think it will be recommended over and over again.

Mistborn – Brandon Sanderson
This is another one that might already be viewed as a modern classic. Whenever someone is new to the fantasy genre, this is the book series that gets recommended to start your journey. I think that makes it a classic in the fantasy genre and I expect readers to pick this up for decades to come.

A Court of Thorns and Roses – Sarah J. Maas
While this is my least favourite Sarah J. Maas book, I can see this becoming a modern classic. For a lot of readers this was the start of romantasy books and it still gets recommended all the time. I can imagine a future where people recommend ACOTAR to readers who want to see where romantasy began.

Shatter Me – Tahereh Mafi
For a while we were all reading YA dystopian novels and this was a very popular one. I feel like this is still one a lot of readers gravitate towards, also because we got more books after the original trilogy. Personally I was a bit disappointed halfway through, so I stopped in the middle of the second trilogy.

Red Queen – Victoria Aveyard
Another YA dystopian/fantasy that still get recommended. This is one of the books that set the YA dystopian standard in my opinion and once again I can see readers in the future telling each other this is where you should start your journey.

The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo – Taylor Jenkins Reid
This is the only non fantasy/sci-fi book on the list. I don’t read enough romance and literary fiction to say much about those books. But this is a book you can mention among (casual) readers and almost everyone will know what you are talking about. I don’t expect that to change anytime soon.

Six of Crows – Leigh Bardugo
If you say heist novel, you say Six of Crows. I love this duology so much and I really hope this becomes a modern classic. Once again, I can imagine a future where readers will recommend Six of Crows to anyone wanting to read a heist story. It’s also a perfect example of the found family trope.

The Poppy War – R.F. Kuang
I wasn’t completely sure about this pick to be honest. This is such a brutal book (and series) and I’m not sure how many readers will actually read this book. But that might also be the case with classics in general ;). It is a series I would highly recommend and I think it has a really interesting take on the main character.

Illuminae – Amie Kaufman & Jay Kristoff
This is such a unique book, I don’t think I’ve come across a concept like this outside of this series. That also makes it a modern classic to me, it truly did something different in its genre. Whenever readers are looking for a book like this, I think they will come back to this series time and time again.

Saga – Brian K. Vaughan & Fiona Staples
I had to include this graphic novel series. This has become the start of many readers’ graphic novel journey. And I can imagine this series doing just that for other readers for years to come. Whenever someone wants to start with graphic novels, this is a perfect gateway for them.
These are 10 modern books I think might become classics in the future. I’m really curious to hear your thoughts, what did you think of my picks? And would you include any other books? Let me know down below!
