This past Friday I went to movies with two of my friends. We saw Snow White and of course I wanted to share my thoughts with you all. I grew up with the animated Disney version and I was curious to see what the live action version would be like. So let’s jump in!
A princess joins forces with seven dwarfs and a group of rebels to liberate her kingdom from her cruel stepmother the Evil Queen.
There has been a lot of negativity surrounding this movie and I wasn’t really planning on watching it at first to be honest. But my friends wanted to go and I had to admit I was curious about it.
I heard there was controversy surrounding the CGI of the dwarfs and you probably have heard about Rachel Zegler speaking out for Palestina while Gal Gadot spoke out for Isreal (as she is Israeli and has served in the army there). And then there is the part of the story a lot of people always have had some issue with; did Snow White consent to being kissed while basically in a coma.
First things first, the story changed in some parts compared to the animated Disney version I grew up with. Snow White teams up with a group of rebels and want to take back her kingdom so her people can get back to the lives they were living before the Evil Queen. I really liked these changes! The rebels were a great addition to the story and it all gave more agency to Snow White’s actions. I have to say, I didn’t love the overly sweet situation in the village at the start and the end of the story, but I guess it is still a Disney movie haha.
The clash between the Evil Queen and Snow White at the end was very good versus evil where good doesn’t have to do anything that would be morally grey or worse. I personally love stories where the main characters have to become morally grey to defeat the enemy but I guess this fitted better with the story. It’s just my personal preference to get a different type of story haha.
As I mentioned before, a ton of people wanted to know what the consent situation would be like in this movie and I personally liked how they handled it. Snow White already knew her true love before eating the poisoned apple so I personally don’t think she minded being kissed, but just in case they mentioned it in a song so she kind of gave consent. I only noticed it in the song because I knew it was a storyline that had gotten a lot of attention, I don’t think I would’ve noticed other wise.
Talking about the songs, they were the highlight of the movie for me! Rachel Zegler has an amazing voice and I really liked the songs. I think they hoped Waiting On A Wish would become the new Let It Go, it had a very similar vibe but it wasn’t my favorite song by a long shot. Heigh-Ho with the dwarfs was wonderful, and I could not sit still when it was playing haha. It was one of my favorite parts of the movie. But I don’t think it was my favorite song (definitely top 3 though!).
All is Fair was another great song, it’s the villain song and it was really good. Gal Gadot did a great job, the song seemed incredibly hard to sing well. I have no vocal training whatsoever so I might be way off, but it seemed like a really challenging song. My favorite song though was Princess Problems! I got an enemies to lovers vibe for Snow White and Jonathan during that song and you know I’m all about that! Since getting out of the movie theatre I have been singing along with these songs and I’m craving another good musical type movie. So I’m open to suggestions haha.
