As a V.E. Schwab fangirl I am subscribed to her newsletter and I really enjoy reading it every month. It’s a little glimpse into her mind and I like staying up to date on what is going on with her. One of the things she shared in this month’s newsletter was an article she wrote for the New York Times and I wanted to share that with you all. So let’s jump in!
V.E. Schwab talks about her favorite fantasy books that are cross-genre books. They might not be the fantasy books you first think off but they all do have something fantastical. I wanted to see if I read any or if I would be interested in them. So let’s take a look.
FANTASY X POLICE PROCEDURAL
The Likeness – Tana French
While I did want to read a Tana French book, I’m not sure this fantasy crossroads is my type of crossover. Usually I like my police procedurals pretty realistic. I do like a fantasy with a mystery element, but a mystery with a fantasy element is less my thing. So I’m not sure I would pick this one up to be honest.
FANTASY X FAMILY SAGA
The Immortalists – Chloe Benjamin
This isn’t one I would naturally gravitate to, but I have to admit I’m a bit intrigued now. I could for sure see myself reading this book and I have actually added it to my Audible wishlist right away haha. This is an Addie LaRue type of book in regards to the fantasy aspect in my opinion, and that is for sure something I enjoy.
FANTASY X HISTORICAL FICTION
The Underground Railroad – Colson Whitehead
I hadn’t heard of this book and I’m not really sure how to feel about it. It sounds really interesting and like such an important story. But at the same time, it’s not the kind of book I usually pick up and I think this one would probably remain on my TBR for quite a while.
FANTASY X EVEN MORE ALTERNATE HISTORY
The Lies of Locke Lamora – Scott Lynch
I own a copy of this one and seeing it on Victoria’s list makes me want to pick it up right away. Ever since I got a copy I’ve been wanting to read it, but I never actually started. This might be a good time to change that especially since I already have the audiobook and I need to start a new audiobook haha.
FANTASY X COZY ROMANCE
Legends & Lattes – Travis Baldree
This is another one I have on my TBR and I want to read it badly! I have heard great things about this book and I have high hopes for my read. This is one I plan on reading quite soon, so hopefully that will happen.
FANTASY X CRIME
Jade City – Fonda Lee
I recently read this one and I loved it! This is such a great book and right up my alley. I knew I would love it and I was so happy I did. There are two more books in the series and I do plan on reading those soonish.
FANTASY X HORROR (AND HISTORY)
The Reformatory – Tananarive Due
Knowing this is a horror story immediately makes me not want to read it. I scare really easy and I just know I would not enjoy this one. There have been a couple MG horror stories I loved, but the last YA horror I tried I DNF’ed haha.
It was really fun looking at some books knowing V.E. Schwab recommends them. I do want to read a couple of these and it’s such a shame I only have read one of them. Have you read any of these books? And would you want to read any of the others? Let me know down below!
