Review | Sunrise on the Reaping – Suzanne Collins

This week was the release of Sunrise on the Reaping, the newest book in the Hunger Games series. Of course I immediately had to dive in. I had a really busy week because of parent-teacher meetings, but I managed to listen to the audiobook from and to work and I no time at all I devoured this story. So let’s take a look at what I thought of the book!

When you’ve been set up to lose everything you love, what is there left to fight for?

As the day dawns on the fiftieth annual Hunger Games, fear grips the districts of Panem. This year, in honor of the Quarter Quell, twice as many tributes will be taken from their homes.

Back in District 12, Haymitch Abernathy is trying not to think too hard about his chances. All he cares about is making it through the day and being with the girl he loves.

When Haymitch’s name is called, he can feel all his dreams break. He’s torn from his family and his love, shuttled to the Capitol with the three other District 12 tributes: a young friend who’s nearly a sister to him, a compulsive oddsmaker, and the most stuck-up girl in town. As the Games begin, Haymitch understands he’s been set up to fail. But there’s something in him that wants to fight . . . and have that fight reverberate far beyond the deadly arena.

This newest book in the Hunger Games franchise is all about Haymitch’s Games. And thanks to Catching Fire we already now roughly how those Games went. A really interesting way of starting a book, you think you know the story already but it quickly turned out that not all was as it seemed. And that was very intentional by Suzanne Collins. As the theme of this book was propaganda.

“All propaganda is lies, even when one is telling
the truth. I don’t think this matters so long as
one knows what one is doing, and why.” — George Orwell”

Suzanne Collins wrote a masterpiece once again and she reminded me why I love this series so much. It makes me incredibly uncomfortable, I still remember reading The Hunger Games for the first time and being so upset about it. I didn’t have anyone to talk to about the book and after reading the whole series I first started reading bookblogs! This newest instalment managed to incite that uncomfortable feeling again and I love how these books make you think about the political climate and your own morals.

“They will not use my tears for their entertainment.”

The story in this book was really good and I loved the characters a lot. But what I loved possibly even more was all the mentions of people we already knew, like Katniss’ parents for example. I won’t spoiler who else is in the book, as they were amazing easter eggs and I loved getting to experiencing them for myself. Also, I definitely bawled my eyes out for some parts. Especially at the end! Luckily I was standing in my shower listening to the audiobook for that part, so my tears were washed away immediately hahahaha.

All in all I loved this book! I would highly recommend reading it. Even though you think you already know the story, I promise you you don’t. I might reread the rest of the series as well now that I’m back in this world. Have you read the newest book yet? What did you think of it? Let me know down below!
