Bookish Beginnings on Friday | The Book of Gold – Ruth Frances Long

We have a lot of eARC’s and we want to promote them a little bit more. So we decided to do some more Bookish Beginnings On Friday. Today I wanted to share the beginning of The Book of Gold. This book will be released in November, so this is the perfect time to see if I like it!

A desperate thief. A magical book. And a heist for the ages.

There’s only one thing notorious thief Lyta loves more than a big score: her little brother, Kit. But when Kit is arrested for producing seditious pamphlets, he stands to lose not only his printing press, but possibly his life.

In exchange for her brother’s freedom, Lyta strikes a daring bargain with the king -she will steal the infamous Book of Gold: a mysterious manuscript reputed to be hiding vast magical power within.

It’s just the kind of challenge Lyta relishes, but she didn’t bargain for a secretive scholar, her brother’s interference, or the return of handsome and brooding Captain Sylvian Chant, once her lover and partner in crime, now an incorruptible royal bodyguard . . .

Lord Alderton’s masked ball was practically an invitation to be robbed as far as Lyta was concerned, an open challenge to infiltrate his hallowed halls and make off with whatever shining treasures just happened to find their way into her hands.

I have to say, I was instantly sold on this book. We start off with a map (LOVE) and a list of the most important characters. That was already interesting and it made sure I was immediately invested. We have partners in crime and in business, gods, a missing husband, a deceased King and a deceased mom, just to name a few things.

Before I started reading the first paragraph I already had a feeling I would like this book. And that first bit did not disappoint! I love a good heist book so I only read the first bit of the synopsis before I downloaded this eARC and after the first paragraph I want to keep on going. This might definitely be a book for me! I plan on reading this one the coming month, hopefully I can do so before the official release.

What do you think after that first paragraph? Is this a book you would like to read? What is your favorite heist book (or movie)? Let me know in the comments down below!
