We wrapped up the month of May, so now it’s time to look back at a year ago. What books did we get in May 2023? And the more important question, what have we read? Keep on reading to see us looking back at our May 2023 bookhaul!
Candyce
Last May we had a bookstore event that gave us 10% off of all English books, so it’s safe to say I added quite a few books to my shelves. I ended up with 24 new books in May, let’s see what and if I’ve read any.
Meet Me at the Lake – Carley Fortune
Read
Meet Me at the Lake was a fun summer read and I think I enjoyed it just a little bit more than this author’s first book. Carley’s latest book released last month that I’m excited to read (and may have already read when this comes online).
Wotakoi: Love is Hard Vol. 1 & Vol. 2 – Fujita
Read
Like I said in my bookhaul post, I loved the anime for Wotakoi. The boyfriend really knows how to choose things I’ll love. I enjoyed the first two volumes and really need to continue with this series soon, because my boyfriend got the full boxset.
Cat + Gamer Vol. 1 & Vol. 2 – Wataru Nadatani
Read
Even though I’m not a gamer, I loved Cat + Gamer. It’s such a cute slice of life manga and I can’t help but smile while reading them. I’ve even read Vol. 3 and Vol. 4 since I got these and I’m anxiously waiting for the next volume to release.
Bunny – Mona Awad
DNF/Unhaul
I knew when I got Bunny that it was a weird book and I expected that when I started reading it. Unfortunately, this one was just too weird for me. I got a little over 100 pages in and was very frustrated. So I decided to DNF and I’ve given my book to a friend.
Things I Wanted to Say & Promises We Meant to Keep – Monica Murphy
Unread
For some reason I haven’t picked up these two yet and I think another book has been released in this series since last year. I still love these covers and I need to read them soon.
Once Upon a Broken Heart – Stephanie Garber
Unread
Once Upon a Broken Heart is the first book in a trilogy that is very well loved. You don’t have to read the Caraval series before starting these, but it is recommended. I haven’t read this one yet, but we’ll be reading these with series slayers later this year.
Snow Crash – Neal Stephenson
Unread
Snow Crash isn’t one that I’ve read yet, but I’m still ready to say yes to the Ready Player One vibes. I may just need to suggest this one again at book club.
Half a Soul – Olivia Atwater
Unread
Since buying Half a Soul I’ve actually seen more people on YouTube read and recommend this book. It’s still one I know I’ll love, but just haven’t gotten to yet.
Nightbirds – Kate J. Armstrong
Unread
Why haven’t I picked up Nightbirds yet? Outlawed magic, secrets, and political intrigue are all things I love. I did recently see that Nightbirds got a cover change as we’re heading to the release of book two. I really don’t like when that happens.
Silver in the Bone – Alexandra Bracken
Unread
Another one I still need to read. I really don’t have enough time for all of the books I want to read, haha. Silver in the Bone’s sequel is releasing soon though, so I should squeeze this one in soon.
The Foxglove King – Hannah Witten
Read
The Foxglove King is one I read earlier this year and I enjoyed. It’s a dark, gothic fantasy with an interesting magic system. I will say it took me a bit to really get into this one, but it interested me enough to read the sequel. I read that in May and loved it! I can’t wait for the next book.
Delicious Monsters – Liselle Sambury
Unread
Delicious Monsters is another book I’m surprised I haven’t read yet, but really need to. Liselle Sambury also just released another book a few months ago. It’s time for me to catch up.
Everyone in My Family Has Killed Someone – Benjamin Stevenson
Read
Everyone in My Family Has Killed Someone won’t be a book for everyone, but I had a really good time. Even though the author is basically telling you everything I still didn’t figure everything out. I’ll be reading the next book in this world soon.
Practice Makes Perfect – Sarah Adams
Unread
I actually just recently read The Rule Book by this author and loved it. So I need to catch up with her backlist, including Practice Makes Perfect. I’ve also heard great things about this one, so nothing is stopping me.
The True Love Experiment – Christina Lauren
Unread
I actually just mentioned The True Love Experiment in a Top Ten Tuesday post that this was a book I couldn’t wait to get my hands on, but still haven’t read. I think I’m shocked, because this one has a romance author as a main character.
Yellowface – R.F. Kuang
Read
Yellowface was such an interesting story and even though it’s fiction I can definitely see something like this actually happening, because in some ways it has? Publishing is a weird world and definitely not fair in many aspects.
That Summer Feeling – Bridget Morrissey
Read
That Summer Feeling was a perfect summer read and it made me so happy. It really hit me in all the feels. Now only if I could find an adult summer camp to go to and read the whole time there, haha.
The Book That Wouldn’t Born – Mark Lawrence
Unread
The Book That Wouldn’t Burn is one I’ve been thinking about starting recently after one of my friends read and loved it. I’ve also heard some people say the world building can be a bit confusing, so I am a bit hesitant. The sequel just released though, so I should read it soon.
Roll for Initiative – Jaime Formato
Read
I actually just read Roll for Initiative in May and I loved it. Middle grade books are special and this one reminded me why I need to read more of them. I’ve played Dungeons and Dragons before and I love how the author incorporated it into Riley’s story.
Some Desperate Glory – Emily Tesh
Unread
I don’t read a lot of sci-fi, but Some Desperate Glory is one that caught my eye. Maybe I should suggest to my book club sometime this year.
Path of Prophecy – Kara S. Weaver
Unread
I’m a bad friend, because I still haven’t finished reading her series. It is on my list to finish this year! I will get it read.
End Result
Read: 10/24 – 41.7%
Unhaul/DNF: 1/24 – 4.2%
TBR: 13/24 – 54.1%
Isabelle
I wasn’t reading much last year and so I also wasn’t getting that many new books. This year has been completely different though and I hope that means that I will at least start to finish some books from my TBR. Last May I only got one audiobook so let’s see if I actually read that one.
Audible
Empire of Storms – Sarah J. Maas
Read
This was part of my Throne of Glass reread last year, that’s why I got the audiobook. I already listened to the whole series again this year (and started AGAIN with the reread haha). So this was a very well spent Audible credit last year.
End Result
Read: 1/1 – 100%
TBR: 0/1 – 0%
So that’s this month’s looking back at our bookhaul! Have you read any of these? Or do you keep track of if you read the books you collect? Let us know in the comments! We’d love to hear from you.
