Can’t Wait Wednesday | The Familiar – Leigh Bardugo

We wanted to do another bookish meme on Wednesday and after doing Can’t Wait Wednesday a few times we decided that would be a fun one to bring around more often! About twice a month you’ll see this meme on our blog.

Can’t Wait Wednesday is a weekly meme hosted by Wishful Endings, to spotlight and discuss the books we’re excited about that we have yet to read. Generally they’re books that have yet to be released. It’s based on Waiting on Wednesday, hosted by Jill at Breaking the Spine.

From the New York Times bestselling author of Ninth House, Hell Bent, and creator of the Grishaverse series comes a highly anticipated historical fantasy set during the Spanish Golden Age

In a shabby house, on a shabby street, in the new capital of Madrid, Luzia Cotado uses scraps of magic to get through her days of endless toil as a scullion. But when her scheming mistress discovers the lump of a servant cowering in the kitchen is actually hiding a talent for little miracles, she demands Luzia use those gifts to better the family’s social position.

What begins as simple amusement for the bored nobility takes a perilous turn when Luzia garners the notice of Antonio Pérez, the disgraced secretary to Spain’s king. Still reeling from the defeat of his armada, the king is desperate for any advantage in the war against England’s heretic queen—and Pérez will stop at nothing to regain the king’s favor.

Determined to seize this one chance to better her fortunes, Luzia plunges into a world of seers and alchemists, holy men and hucksters, where the line between magic, science, and fraud is never certain. But as her notoriety grows, so does the danger that her Jewish blood will doom her to the Inquisition’s wrath. She will have to use every bit of her wit and will to survive—even if that means enlisting the help of Guillén Santangel, an embittered immortal familiar whose own secrets could prove deadly for them both.

There was only one contender for today! Because this week Leigh Bardugo announced her newest upcoming release!! And this is a standalone, adult, historical fantasy. I’m so excited for this one, I can’t even express it haha. Leigh mentioned that this was inspired by her family’s history and it just sounds really interesting. Books like this remind me that I love reading about history and I can’t wait to dive into this time period.

Had you heard about this release yet? Are you just excited as I am? I’ll admit I still have to read Leigh’s Ninth House, but that could be a great thing to do while I’m waiting on this release. Let me know your thoughts down below!

  1. I figured I would be seeing this one all over this week since it was just revealed. I don’t know if it appeals to me right off but I figure I’ll jump on the bandwagon at some point.
