It’s that time of the month again to see if we actually read the books we buy. This post is always pretty intense to look at, haha. We really do want to read more of the books we buy, so we’ll keep on going. Today we’re look back at the bookhaul from January 2020. What did we read? What haven’t we read? Keep on reading to find out!
Candyce
I’m once again afraid to look back at all of the books I’ve collected, but haven’t yet read. Lately I’ve been trying to look ahead to at least read a few of the books we’ll be talking about every month, but that didn’t happen now. In January 2020 I added 22 books to my collection (6 were gifted). How many did I read?
The Wizards of Once: Twice Magic – Cressida Cowell
Unread
This is the second book in this series and I still haven’t even read the first, haha. I have a feeling I’m going to try and do a middle grade May again, so this will definitely be going on the list. I still think this sounds like a lot of fun.
The Guinevere Deception – Kiersten White
Unread
The Guinevere Deception is a book I definitely should’ve already have read. I have a feeling this is a retelling I’ll enjoy and the sequel is already out in the world. It’s one I even have to read. I either need to get these going or wait until the third book releases and do the trilogy in one go.
The Bookworm Crush – Lisa Brown Roberts
Unread – on my February TBR
Sometimes even though you really want to read books right away, you just don’t get around to reading them. The Bookworm Crush is one I’m still really excited about and I’m planning on reading it in February.
Steelheart – Brandon Sanderson
Unread
2020 was supposed to be the year I read a lot of Brandon Sanderson books. I only read two, haha. Steelheart is still high on my TBR list. Especially because my boyfriend is getting a boardgame based on this series later this year. It’ll be fun to understand all of the references.
Jackaby – William Ritter
Read
Since adding this book to my shelves I’ve read the whole Jackaby series. I loved all of the books and really think this is an underrated series. Not many people talk about it, but it deserves more attention. Hopefully we’ll also get more in this world, because the author definitely left the door open!
Bring Me Their Hearts – Sara Wolf
Unread
I actually bought Bring Me Their Hearts to read the ARC of the sequel I received. Both hasn’t happened yet… oops! I’ve heard some good things about this trilogy, so yet again one I really need to get around to.
Scythe – Neal Shusterman
Read
In December 2020 I bought the final two books in this trilogy, but Scythe wasn’t available when I did. I had already read the e-book, but definitely needed the physical book on my shelves. Scythe was such an interesting book and I plan to do a re-read in 2021, so I can finish this trilogy.
Renaissance Faires have always sounded like a lot of fun and I’ve helped out at a type of faire, so a book like Well Met was a great read. The romance fell a little flat for me, but I loved the setting and characters.
Sadie – Courtney Summers
Unread
Another book I’m honestly shocked I haven’t read yet. Lately, I’ve been on a thriller/mystery kick, so this will be on my TBR soon. Sadie gets a lot of high ratings on Goodreads and I’m excited to finally read this one.
One of Us is Next – Karen M. McManus
Read
After being a little disappointed about the ending of One of Us is Lying I was a little hesitant about picking up One of Us is Next. In the end I’m happy I did. This one definitely had some twists and turns and I didn’t see the ending coming!
The Dark Vault – V.E. Schwab
Unread
There are just way too many books and not enough time. V.E. Schwab is one of my favorite authors and I’m still working on the backlog. The Dark Vault is the bundle of The Archived. It’s on my 2021 reading list!
A Heart So Fierce and Broken – Brigid Kemmerer
Unread
After really enjoying A Curse So Dark and Lonely I just never got around to reading the sequel. The third and final book just released, so it’s time to continue with this series.
The Vanishing Stair – Maureen Johnson
Unread
Truly Devious was so much fun and I’ve been looking forward to The Vanishing Stair. A lot of readers said this book left them wanting the third book right away, so I decided to wait until the paperback was of available so I can read in one go. I got the third one for Christmas, so I need to add this to my list soon.
Winterhouse & The Secrets of Winterhouse – Ben Guterson
Currently Reading/Unread
I’m loving middle grade books and especially when they have puzzles and mysteries. I recently started the first book and have definitely enjoyed what I’ve read so far. Winterhouse is definitely written in a way that I know I’ll fly through this story.
Bringing Down the Duke – Evie Dunmore
Unread
TBR and Beyond is doing a group read of Bringing Down the Duke this month, so I will finally be able to say that I read this one soon. I actually plan on starting it after finishing this post. A lot of reader friends have read and loved this book, so I have high hopes!
Brooke O’Brien Collection
5/6 Read
I’m still helping Brooke out in her group and she’s written a few more amazing books since I received this package from her. I’ve read all of these except Lost Before You. That’s something I really need to change soon. Brooke writes amazing characters, so I know it’s not one I want to miss!

I have a pretty good feeling about these looking back posts for 2020. Last year I really tried to cut back on buying books and I did a pretty good job. And I believe I also read a good amount of the books I did get. In January I did get 7 new books, so let’s see how much of them I read.
Pumpkinheads – Rainbow Rowell
Read
I saved Pumpkinheads for the fall season but I did read it! This was a very enjoyable read and I’m happy I finally read it. It was perfect to read it during fall because it was very atmospheric. Also, I really want to go to a pumpkin patch now!
The Promised Neverland 6 – Kaiu Shirai
Read
The Promised Neverland is one of my absolute favorite manga series out there and I definitely read this one. At this point I don’t have any unread volumes for this series on my shelves so I hope to buy some more soon. I can’t wait to find out what happens next with these kids.
Witch Hat Atelier 2-4 – Kamome Shirahama
Read
Witch Hat Atelier is such a cute manga series and I love it so much. After reading the first one I had to get more right away and I read them pretty soon after I think. I really want to get more volumes now so I can keep up with the series. Volume 7 was just released in English so I have a little catching up to do.
Infinity Son – Adam Silvera
Unread
I started reading Infinity Son but put it down in favor of something else. This post definitely reminded me I need to get back to it because I think the sequel is also out already. There were some mixed reviews but I really enjoyed the world I read about so far.
The Near Witch – Victoria Schwab
Unread
I own almost all of Victoria’s books but I haven’t read all of them yet. And this is one I haven’t read yet. I love the edition I got and I’m excited to read her first published book. At the moment I’m reading Addie LaRue but I might pick up another V.E. Schwab book after that!

We both actually read some of the books we bought in January 2020! Yay us, haha. Hopefully this will be the case as we continue these posts every month this year. Have you read any of these books? If you have, we’d love to know what you think. Let us know in the comments!
I loved the Jackaby books too!
They’re so good! More people need to read them.
I agree!
Sadie by Courtney Summers is SO good! I highly recommend checking out the podcast while you read! A lot of the chapters are read on the podcast. Other chapters aren’t read, so you can pause and read before the next section picks back up.
That’s really good to know! Thank you for letting me know.
