“Readers won't be able to put down this dark and riveting tale of power and revenge.”—Kirkus Reviews (starred review)
Praise for Vicious
“Schwab's characters feel vital and real, never reduced to simple archetypes...In a genre that tends toward the flippant or pretentious, this is a rare superhero novel as epic and gripping as any classic comic. Schwab's tale of betrayal, self-hatred, and survival will resonate with superhero fans as well as readers who have never heard of Charles Xavier or Victor von Doom.”—Publishers Weekly (starred review)
"V. E. Schwab's Vicious is the superhero novel I've been waiting for: fresh, merciless, and yes, vicious. Wow."—Mira Grant, New York Times bestselling author of Blackout

Perhaps she was glass. But glass is only brittle until it breaks. Then it’s sharp.

Cover

I adore the cover I had for this one. There are a couple of cover out there and I have the Illumicrate special edition. This one is also signed so you can imagine how happy I am 😉 I love the colors on the cover (basically all of her books fit together <3) and think they fit the story quite well.

The life I had is gone. There’s no getting it back. I’d rather make a new one. A better one. One where I don’t have to pretend to be weak to survive.

Review

It had been years since I read the first book in the Villains series, Vengeful and I wish I reread that one before diving into Vengeful. During the first couple of chapters I kept thinking back to the first book and realized I had forgotten a lot of important details. In the end I was still able to really enjoy this story but I might reread both books before we get the third book, and yes it has been confirmed there will be anther book!

I LOVED the opening chapter of this one. We get to meet Marcella right away and I loved her a lot. She is one of our new main characters and she is written so so well. I think Marcella was actually my favorite part of this second book. She is completely herself and will not apologize for it. Apart from Marcella we also meet June. While she is very interesting, she also stays a bit of a mystery. And if I’m being honest, I didn’t like her that much. Her power is really cool but I think the only time I actually liked her was in the very last part of the book.

Maybe we are broken. But we put ourselves back together. We survived. That’s what makes us so powerful. And as for family—well, blood is always family, but family doesn’t always have to be blood.

Of course we still have our main characters, those lovable and very morally grey characters! We also got some more backstory on one of them and I loved that so much. It was great reading it and thinking about my feelings. V.E. Schwab is amazing at writing questionable characters and it’s great going back and forth between some of them being a good person or not.

The plot of the book wasn’t the best I’ve ever read, however it was still fun and interesting. I do think that some of the plot lines  were only in there to set us up for the last book and that’s a shame. The book is pretty big and not always super fast-paced. However, once I got back into the story I did go through it pretty quickly. I wanted to read more about these wonderful characters and I was interested to see where the story was going.

All in all I’m super happy I finally read this one! It was so much fun reading it with some of the members of the TBR and Beyond facebook group and I can’t wait for the last book. Are you reading this series? Or do you plan on reading it? Come talk to me in the comments!
