Royal Update #2

We thought it was time for a fun new post every week. In the Royal Update one of us updates you about our personal life, bookish news, what we’re reading, watching and listening to and anything else that might apply to this post. We thought it would be fun to share a bit more about our personal lifes and hope you think so too!

This week was actually pretty busy. It’s officially December and when you work in retail, things get busy. I help make our schedule and it’s a big puzzle to make sure everything has enough staff during the busier moments. This week was fun though, because I only had to work two days.

On Thursday my boyfriend’s mother celebrated her birthday (one of the reasons I only had to work two days this week). His parents don’t live close to us, so we decided to spend the night there. It was a fun afternoon with his family and we went out to dinner with his parents and sister. After dinner, his mother gave me this cute Christmas decoration. It already has a place on the table in our living room.

On Friday on our way home, we stopped to get our first “oliebollen”  of the season. If you’re not familiar with them, it’s basically fried dough. They can be found here near the end of the year, they are especially loved around New Year. There is a stand close by that was voted as one of the best bakers of them a couple of years ago. I totally agree, because they tasted amazing.

After that, we decided it was time to go get our Christmas tree. Our cats are almost three and have loved our tree a bit too much the past few years. We know that pineneedles aren’t good for them and keep a close eye on them. It’s mostly the ornaments they want, haha. And the basket the tree goes in.

Once everything got settled, we had to decorate of course! This really is my favorite time of the year. I love the scent of the tree and the coziness of the lights and decorations. Add some Christmas movies and music and I’m one happy person!

On Saturday we were going to go the Winter Efteling (an amusement park here) with my boyfriend’s work, but I wasn’t feeling really well. I’m coming down with something, so we decided to stay in and have a relaxing weekend. I got some blogging done and curled up with my book. December is filled with a lot of fun posts, so it’s nice to have some of them all done!

Hopefully my life update will be a bit more exciting next time when I’m feeling a bit better! You can expect a lot of talk about Christmas movies and stuff in the near future though, haha. Be prepared!

In the past week or so I’ve received more ARCs than I thought I would, haha.My goal is to read more from my own shelves next year and by the looks of it, I’m not off to a good start, haha. That’s okay though, I love supporting authors! Let’s see what I received.

The first one I received was Jesse and the Ice Princess by Michelle MacQueen. I’ve loved the other contemporary books she’s written, so I have a good feeling about this one. Jesse and the Ice Princess releases in January, so expect to see a review next month around release day!

In April I read The Haunting of Elmwood Manor. I enjoyed this middle grade adventure, even though I thought the characters acted a bit too mature for their age. Or that the author wrote them a bit old for a middle grade. I recently saw the sequel, The Ghost on Firefly Lane, was on Netgalley and I requested it. I’m curious to see how the story continues.

Christina Butrum writes sweet and clean romances. Her small town series, Maple Glen, has a new release coming soon. Lesson for Two releases this week and I got an ARC from the author. I’m on her review team and I enjoy reading her stories. I love the characters and romances in small towns are definitely a favorite of mine!

I also received an ARC of So Close by Serena Bell. I’m also on her ARC team and was actually surprised when I got my ARC. So Close sounds like it’s going to be a series I love, so I am definitely reading this one. It releases at the end of January. There isn’t a cover yet, but it can be found on Goodreads.

Shani Petroff writes stories I love and has a new release coming in January. Finding Mr. Better-Than-You sounds like just the book for me. I signed up for the blog tour, so my review will come online during the tour. If you’re looking for a fun holiday read, I have to recommend her book My New Crush Gave to Me.

Another author I read for and the last ARC for this royal update, is a book by Sawyer Bennett. She writes a lot of romance, but in many different ways. Code Name: Heist releases in January and has a lot of suspense elements. I love the characters this author writes!

I didn’t get all the reading done that I wanted to this week, but I did have some fun. This past week, I was able to finish two books and a novella.

I read 10 Blind Dates and loved it!! This was such a cute holiday read and I gave it five stars. My review will be posted later this month. Isabelle read it as well and we plan on doing a buddy review. After that I read the holiday novella, The Way Back. My only issue with this story was that I needed more. 84 pages wasn’t enough to keep me satisfied, haha. Last but not least, I finished Beard Necessities by Penny Reid. I love the Winston Brothers and definitely recommend their stories.

I’m also working on two books as we speak. The City of Brass is such an interesting book. I’ll definitely finish it at the beginning of this week. It took me a bit to warm up to all of the story, but once everything starts coming together, it gets good. At the moment, I’m also reading The Wicked King. After The Cruel Prince ended up being a lot better than expected, I couldn’t resist starting the next book.

There are also a few books on my TBR I plan on reading. I plan on reading The Boyfriend Blog, Lesson for Two and a beta read I’ve really been looking forward to. I’m sure there will be more as well, haha.

I know there’s always bookish news being announced, but you don’t realize how much until you start tracking it for the blog. A lot of interesting things were announced since our last Royal Update. I’m sure I haven’t found all of it, but here’s what I found!

I will start off with the fact that The Lunar Chronicles are getting new covers. Marissa Meyer announced that this past week. I’m not really sure what I think about them yet, because I really do love the old covers.

Fans of Lifel1k3 will be happy, because the title and cover of the third book have been revealed. Truel1f3 will be released June 2020. I loved the first book and really need to get to the sequel. Jay Kristoff writes amazing books, but knows how to leave us with cliffhangers. So I may wait a bit closer to the third book releasing.

I loved A Touch of Gold, so I was really excited to see the cover reveal for the next book. We have to wait until September 2020, but the cover is stunning!

The sequel to The Merciful Crow, The Faithless Hawk, also had a cover reveal. I really love these covers and it makes me want to pick up the first book in the near future! Friends have had some mixed reviews, but I am very curious.

Besides getting cover reveals, there were also some book announcements. My favorite was the one from the author of Red, White and Royal Blue. That was a favorite of mine this year and I am excited for her next book. Unfortunately we have to wait until 2021!!

Amanda Foody, the author of Ace of Shades, will be writing a middle grade duology. I loved Ace of Shades, so I’m very excited to see what she does witha middle grade fantasy!

Amie Kaufman and Ryan Graudin are teaming up to bring us a middle grade adventure fantasy series, The World Between Blinks. I have enjoyed Amie Kaufman’s writing, so this is one I’ll be keeping an eye out for. Middle-grade is something I want to read more of. Sounds like I’ll have plenty of options soon!

This will be a fast update, I actually didn’y buy anything this past week. The only thing I purchased was the January Illumicrate. It will have two books and they both look amazing!! I can’t wait until I receive this one in January!

In all honesty, I’ve been addicted to the Hallmark Christmas movies lately. I know they’re all very predictable, but I love the feeling they give me. The happily ever after is extra special around Christmas time. That will basically be what I mostly watch the next month.

I did see that the newest and I believe last season of Fuller House is on Netflix and I need to watch it.I’m sad it’s ending though! I grew up loving Full House, so it will always have a special place in my heart.

As for music, it’s just like my watching habits. It’s Christmas all the time. While I blog, I have the radio on, but when on the train to work I’ve been listening to Lea Michele’s Christmas album. I was a big fan of Glee and I love her voice, so this one made me very happy. The songs she did are amazing and have been on repeat for a week or two.

How has your week been? Did you read any interesting books lately? I’d love to hear from you. Also, if there’s anything we should add to our Royal Updates, feel free to let us know. We’re still giving this one a go and don’t mind adding stuff people want to know about! Have a great week!
