TTT #96| Books On My TBR I’m Avoiding Reading and Why

We have been having fun with Top Ten Tuesday, so we decided we will do one every week. This bookish meme was hosted by The Broke and the Bookish, and has been going since June 2010! Since January 2018 Top Ten Tuesday is hosted by That Artsy Reader Girl.

This week’s topic is Books On My TBR I’m Avoiding Reading and Why. I think this one is definitely more difficult, because I really am going to have to think about this one. Let’s take a look at the books I added to this top ten.

The Cruel Prince – Holly Black This book is so hyped and I’m really afraid that my expectations are going to be way too high. Also, I hear so many mixed reviews. I honestly think this is a book you either love or hate. There is #faerieathon at the moment, so I may take a chance on this book when they do a group read of this one.

Legendary – Stephanie Garber A lot of people may be shocked that I say this, but Caraval actually was a bit disappointing. I did enjoy the story, but it didn’t amaze me like it did so many people. The concept is so much fun. Legendary is the sequel and I already own it. A lot of people say this one is a lot better (even the people who loved Caraval). I’ll have to wait and see.

Kingdom of Ash – Sarah J Maas I’ve actually talked about this book quite often recently. Kingdom of Ash was such an anticipated release of mine last year. Isabelle and I even went to the bookstore on release day! I did start reading Kingdom of Ash, but haven’t gotten past 200 pages or so. I honestly just don’t want it to end. Also, it’s in the drawer downstairs. I think I need to put it more out in the open!

Carve the Mark – Veronica Roth I was really looking forward to Carve the Mark when I was waiting for it to release. I have to start off by saying that the cover of this book is stunning!! That being said, near the release and afterwards I heard so many negative things about this book. I’m all for reading a book to find out myself, but I guess it kind of put me off of this one. I actually  forgot about it before writing this post. Oops!

Dreams of Gods and Monsters – Laini Taylor Another trilogy I started so long ago! I have to say while writing this I have started reading this final book in the Daughter of Smoke and Bone trilogy. There’s nothing that really stopped me from picking it up, except I just don’t want it to end!

Dev1at3 – Jay Kristoff Lifel1k3 is a book I read earlier this year and loved it! The sequel, Dev1at3 has been out for a couple of months, but I’m afraid. Friends have said Jay Kristoff is his evil self again and leaves the readers hanging! I may just have to wait until the release of the third book is a bit closer!

Thunderhead – Neal Shusterman Scythe was a book that surprised me in such a pleasant way! I loved the concept and how this author told the story. Thunderhead is the sequel and apparently ends with a major cliffhanger. The final book of the trilogy was postponed and will be releasing soon, so I need to read this one soon!

The Hating Game – Sally Thorne I love romances and especially enemies to lovers! The Hating Game definitely got a lot of hype and is loved by many. Unfortunately a few friends of mine were really disappointed by this one. I don’t know if their expectations were too high, but it’s definitely holding me back from reading it!

Without Merit – Colleen Hoover This author is known for her heartbreaking romances and Without Merit differs from these. It’s a young adult book and a lot different from her previous books! Yet again, another book with a lot of mixed reviews. I’m still curious though, so I will eventually read it!

The Red Scrolls of Magic – Cassandra Clare & Wesley Chu I’m going to be a bad bookworm and say that the biggest reason I haven’t picked up this book yet is the cover! The story seems amazing and I love Magnus, so I was disappointed to see how they designed it. I just don’t want this cover on my shelf. This will change eventually though, because I do really want to read this book!

So these are the books I’ve been avoiding that are on my TBR! if you’ve read any of these, let me know. Also, feel free to put your TTT link in the comments! I will definitely give you a visit!

  1. I might be a little the same with The Cruel Prince. I really do want to read that series but I never seem to get to it, and I’m not even sure why! There must be a reason I’m putting it off lol. Maybe it’s the hype or I’m afraid I won’t like it…

    1. I have the same thing at times. I will constantly put a series off, but then when I think about it, I’m not really completely sure why!

    1. I was already thinking that as I was typing this list 😋

  2. Totally agree with thunderhead! I need the toll before I can read that. I seem to avoid reading my whole tbr 😂 for many reasons because they are all books that I own they are all books I’m really hyped to read and then I don’t want to read them🤦‍♀️I get to excited and then I panic because what if I don’t like it🤷‍♀️😩😂( it’s an issue)! Such a great post!

    1. I completely understand what you mean! I’m so afraid the books will disappoint me or I will expect too much!

    1. I don’t know if I will eventually pick it up or not. Part of me wants to read it to form an opinion myself, but I did forget about it for quite some time.

  3. These are relatively new titles for me. Neal Schusterman has been on my radar for quite some time now. I don’t know what book to read first however.
    Here’s my TTT

    1. After reading Scythe, I realized he has quite a few other books. It’s hard to know where to start when you find out an author has tons of books!

    1. I definitely recommend doing a reread 🙂
I did before the release of Kingdom and Ash and enjoyed reading everything all over again. Especially seeing little details I missed the first time around!

  4. I have The Cruel Prince on mine, too. I always get nervous now when there is so much hype and love for a book.

    1. Yeah, that makes it hard to pick up. I’m so afraid it’s going to disappoint me.

  5. We have a very similar ‘to read’ list. The only one I’ve read is Cruel Prince…It’s pretty good but as you’ve said, over-hyped.

    1. I’m happy to hear something positive about it! Maybe I’ll eventually read it.
A lot died down after awhile and I honestly don’t remember where it started.
