Earlier this week, I posted about the release of The Stand-In Boyfriend. A big thank you to the author and Inkslinger PR for providing me with an ARC to read and review for the blog tour. Today I get to tell you what I thought of the first book in the Grove Valley High series.
Today we have the blog tour of THE STAND-IN BOYFRIEND by Emma Doherty! Check it out and be sure to grab your copy today!
Title: The Stand-In Boyfriend
Author: Emma Doherty
Genre: Contemporary Romance
About The Stand-In Boyfriend:
Livy Chapman is in love with Jessie Stephenson. It’s that simple. She has been for years but he only see’s her as his best friend. His best friend who copies her homework, relies on her to bail him out of trouble and who he hooks up with other girls in front of.
Enough is enough and when Chase Mitchell, star of the soccer team, and all round Mr. Popular steps in and convinces her that they can do each other a favour by pretending to date, Livy is just crazy enough over Jessie to agree to it.
I mean, Chase is just her stand-in boyfriend. Nothing could go wrong. Right?

Review
As a big fan of stories of people pretending to be together to make others jealous/look good and ending up falling for each other, I was really excited for The Stand-In Boyfriend. The summary sounded like something I would love and as soon as I got my ARC, I dove right in! While this story has a lot of things I loved, there were also a few things that I didn’t care for!
Livy is a hardworking student and a great soccer player. She’s the type that does her best and even with a high fever, she’s determined to go to school. Livy has two best friends, Jessie and Sophie. They’ve known each other for ages and were there for her when she needed them. The fact she’s been in love with Jessie for years is hard. He doesn’t seem to see her that way.
Chase is a popular guy and the star of the boys’ soccer team. Everybody knows him, but he isn’t the typical jock. He may not spend time with everyone, but doesn’t make others feel bad. When he approaches Livy to fake a relationship, she isn’t sure. He needs to concentrate on soccer and wants his ex, Abigail, to leave him alone. That’s when the fun starts.
I really think this part of the book would’ve been more fun if we also had Chase’s POV. There were a lot of things involving him of course and I really missed his side and thoughts about everything. HE was my favorite part of the book and I loved how he was really there for Livy. Chase may have been a bit pushy in the beginning, but when they interacted it was so much fun to read.
There was a lot of drama in this book. Instead of most of the book focusing on the things happening between Chase and Livy and how that affected Jessie and Abigail, it was mostly Livy complaining about how things were going and saying she didn’t want to do things. It wasn’t until about over halfway through the book that I actually started liking Livy. Yeah, she went through a lot and I understand why she may have had her doubts, but I felt it took over the book. Especially her obsession with Jessie. It felt like a bit too much at times.
The Stand-In Boyfriend had a lot of fun aspects though. I loved her friend Sophie and I wouldn’t mind a book about her. The parties were interesting and Chase’s friends were really interesting. Once there was more balance between Livy’s thoughts and interacting with Chase, and school I really enjoyed how this story continued. The ending was perfect and left a smile on my face. I am really looking forward to the next book in this series.

Even though there were things that bugged me about this book, I did like this story. I am excited to see what the next books bring! What’s your favorite book that starts off with a fake relationship?
This sounds like a fun premise that’s right up the teen romance aisle. Cute cover, too!
