How I Met My Book #4 | Red Queen – Victoria Aveyard

We were looking for something to post on Sundays when we don’t have anything planned. Then Candyce saw a post on Early Bookish Bird‘s blog and it seemed like the perfect fit. She started #howimetmybook .In this post we tell the story behind our books. The following questions will be answered: Where did we get the book? Why did we pick it up? What made us pick it up in the first place?

There used to be a lot of hype surrounding Red Queen by Victoria Aveyard, while that ensures a ton of people have heard of the book there is also a downside. The first readers were all raving about it and that got everyone’s expectations up through the roof. Unfortunately the book didn’t live up to those expectations for a lot of people. I remember very clearly buying and reading Red Queen and I will tell you all about it today!

In 2015 I went on a vacation to the Dominican Republic with a friend, her parents and another one of our friends. This was going to be a pool and beach type of trip so obviously I needed to bring enough reading material. When we were at the airport I went to the bookshop (as I always do) and saw a recent release; Red Queen. I liked the cover and the synopsis, I hadn’t heard anything about it yet so didn’t have any expectations. I think it was mostly the synopsis that made me pick it up!

I ended up flying through it while laying next to the pool that week. I wasn’t great company to be honest haha. The others would go for a beachwalk and I would ‘watch our stuff’ aka read my book. I was completely immersed in the world and didn’t see most of the plot twist coming. I definitely yelped a couple of times and kept telling my friends they needed to read the book. One of my friends did and I loved sitting next to her and hearing those same yelps haha. The book doesn’t look that great anymore, a week of sun, pool, sunscreen, and cocktails didn’t do it any favors haha. And while some people would probably hate having their book looking like that I actually really like the memories it brings to mind <3

Did you read Red Queen? And the rest of the series? I was quite disappointed with the second book but hope to read number three soon! Hopefully I will enjoy that one.

  1. I got this one as an surprice gift from a friend. I didn´t want to read it at all in the begining when it came out because of all the hype and I felt that I was tired of book is that genre. But then I took it up and I really liked it. The world and how they choose to use their powers was really interesting. I still haven´t read the second book but I think I will sometime when the right feeling hits!

  2. What a fun idea for a post! It’s cool to hear how people came across books. I have not read this one, but I hope the third is better for you than the second. I believe a friend of mine really enjoys these.
