TTT #400 | Books With a School Setting

We have been having fun with Top Ten Tuesday, so we decided we will do one every week. This bookish meme was hosted by The Broke and the Bookish, and has been going since June 2010! Since January 2018 Top Ten Tuesday is hosted by That Artsy Reader Girl.

This week’s topic is a non-bookish freebie and to be honest, I really dislike topics like that haha. I never know what to do for them. But since I’m back to work, and thus back to school I figured I would make it all about books set at schools! I love that setting, so I love talking about it haha.

1. Fangirl – Rainbow Rowell

It’s been so long since I read this one, but I used to love this book so much. Talking about it, makes me want to reread it haha. This is set at a university, still a setting I want to read more of. Cath is also incredibly relatable.

2. The Fixer – Jennifer Lynn Barnes

This is such an underrated series! The series is getting a rebranding though, this book will be rereleased September 2nd as The Ruling Class. Hopefully that will get more people talking about it, because I need a third book! I would describe this is Scandal with teenagers and it is so much fun.

3. The School for Good and Evil – Soman Chainani

This is such a fun MG series. I still need to read the spin-off series and I really want to do so soonish. This series has great messages, but it also just really fun. There is a movie based on the first book, it shows the gorgeous scenery!

4. Every Heart a Doorway – Seanan McGuire

I love a novella series and this is a great one. Eleanor West’s Home for Wayward Children is the perfect setting for all of these stories. It’s not a normal school by any means and I really enjoy the concept. I will admit, I have yet to read this year’s book!

5. Nevernight – Jay Kristoff

A school for assassins counts as a school right? This series broke my heart, but I also enjoyed it so so much. The footnotes added so much world building and details, and through the audiobook it was really easy to listen to them. This is not a school I would want to attend, but I loved reading about it.

6. Dare You to Lie – Amber Lynn Natusch

Another highly underrated series! That also got new covers for the release of the final book last year. I still need to read the last two books and I’m so excited. These are for fans of Veronica Mars and if you know me, you know that is one of my top 3 TV shows EVER. Also criminally underrated haha.

7. A Deadly Education – Naomi Novik

This might be my favorite YA fantasy series? It is at least one of my favorites! Dark academia vibes, another school I would not want to attend, but I love reading about. The main character is amazing, and the scenes about friendships definitely had me cry a bit.

8. The Poppy War – R.F. Kuang

The first half has a school setting, so I say it counts haha. I did not expect this book to go the way it was going. Even though there were a ton of trigger warnings haha. But this book (series) is BRUTAL, I still get sick to my stomach thinking about some of the scenes and even worse when I realise this actually happened/happens.

9. Killing November – Adriana Mather

This reminds me I need to read the sequel! I haven’t heard many people talking about this duology, but I really enjoyed the first book. It’s a school for future assassins, counsellors, spies and impersonators. Sounds pretty cool right?

10. Fence – C.S. Pacat & Johanna the Mad

Ending this list on a lighter note! I always miss the announcement for the newest instalment in this series and I just checked Goodreads to see we already have volume 7. Guess I’ll be placing an order soon…. This is all about fencing and it’s a very, very slow burn. Can’t wait to dive back into this story!

And those were 10 books (or series) that take place at (boarding) schools. Very fitting for me since I’m back to school again and just a setting I adore. Have you read all of these? And do you have any recommendations for me? I would love to hear from you!

  1. If you like books set at (boarding) schools, I highly recommend The Incandescent by Emily Tesh. It’s set in an alternate modern-day Britain where magic is a normal part of life and a subject you can study the same as you can study Maths or English. It’s set in a British private school that has both day and boarding students, and our main character is the headmistress of the school. I love it because it’s an adult fantasy set in a school, but instead of following the students, it follows the teachers! I actually reviewed it recently because I enjoyed it so much.
