We have a lot of eARC’s and we want to promote them a little bit more. So we decided to do some more Bookish Beginnings On Friday. Today I wanted to share the beginning of High Season by Katie Bishop. It’s one of my most recent eARC’s and I really like the sound of it. I’m excited to see how it starts, so let’s dive in!
In the heat of summer, the past can become hazy. . .
For twenty years, Nina Drayton has told herself that she must have seen her sister, Tamara, being murdered by the family babysitter – Josie Jackson. That she doesn’t remember it because she was five, and amnesia is a normal trauma response.
But now, with the anniversary of Tamara’s death approaching and true crime investigators revisiting the case, Nina finds it harder to suppress her doubts. Returning to her family’s sparkling villa on the Cote d’Azur for the first time since the murder, she wants to uncover more about the summer that changed so many lives. Because if she was wrong, then she sent an innocent woman to jail – and the real killer is still walking free.
Lyrical, suspenseful and sultry, this dark examination of the fragile nature of memory is vivid and thought provoking, with all the tension and heat of a moody summer evening.
There is a soft, sleepy light on the water. Later, Nina will think of it as a bottle of sweet, dark rum. The very last embers of an almost extinguished fire. Later, Nina will remember that the heat was heavy, like swimming through warm honey. That the grass was stiff and sharp from lack of moisture. That the tiles, cracked with heat and age, were warmed through. How they felt against her feet. How, in the distance, she could hear the adults talking and laughing. The click of a cocktail glass; the unmistakable sound of her mother’s voice, wavy with drink.
I have to admit, this first bit of the book doesn’t immediately grab me. And I’m not really curious right now away. But at the same time, I do like the writing style in this first bit. And the synopsis already excited me and I was intrigued right away. So while the first paragraph doesn’t make me want to continue reading necessarily, I do still want to read the book.
I’m really excited to find out what happened that summer and hopefully got shocked by some good twists. The early reviews are positive and I can’t wait to find out if I’ll enjoy it as well. I plan on reading it this summer, hopefully that will happen! Is this a book that was already on your radar? Are you excited about this release? Let me know down below!
