As a teacher of kids ages 9 to 12 I’m always interested in good MG books. I do teach here in the Netherlands, so the kids in my class speak Dutch and they mostly read in Dutch as well. Of course I’m trying to get them to love reading as much as I do. Today I wanted to share some of the books they are currently loving. Let’s take a look!

Harry Potter
This series was my favorite when I was younger as well. So while the author is very problematic, I am happy to share my love for the story and the world with the kids in my class! It’s also great to see that some kids don’t shy away from bigger books.

Percy Jackson – Rick Riordan
This is one of the most recent bookseries some of the kids and I bonded over. I enjoyed it a lot when I read it and I think it’s a series most of my kids would enjoy if they would pick them up. Unfortunately a lot of the kids haven’t developed a love of reading yet, so I’m still looking for good ways of getting them to read books like this.

Diary of a Wimpy Kid – Jef Kinney
I personally haven’t read this series, but it’s one the kids absolutely love. It’s really easy to get into, it’s funny and it’s full of drawings. I would love to find a book that would be similar to this, that would also get them to read more.

Dork Diaries – Rachel Renée Russell
This one is popular with a lot of the girls. Some of them even want to exclusively read this series. It’s another one that is really easy to get into, it’s funny and somewhat relatable. That makes this another one that I would love to find something similar like!

Letter for the King – Tonke Dragt
This is actually a Dutch book! We recently listened to a podcast with the whole class about this book. A couple of kids already read this one (and loved it), and a ton of other kids were interested in picking it up as well!
These are just a couple of the books we talk about at school, but they are books most of the kids seem to love. I would love to get some recommendations on MG books you all think the kids might enjoy. That way I could read some books I can then recommend to them as well. So if you have a good idea, I would love to hear from you down below!
