I started reading Onyx Storm almost as soon as it was released and I finished it pretty quickly. But it took me until now to actually write my review, it was quite difficult for me to form my thoughts into something to convey my feelings on the book haha. Hopefully I finally managed to do so! Let’s dive in.
After nearly eighteen months at Basgiath War College, Violet Sorrengail knows there’s no more time for lessons. No more time for uncertainty. Because the battle has truly begun, and with enemies closing in from outside their walls and within their ranks, it’s impossible to know who to trust.
Now Violet must journey beyond the failing Aretian wards to seek allies from unfamiliar lands to stand with Navarre. The trip will test every bit of her wit, luck, and strength, but she will do anything to save what she loves—her dragons, her family, her home, and him.
Even if it means keeping a secret so big, it could destroy everything. They need an army. They need power. They need magic. And they need the one thing only Violet can find—the truth. But a storm is coming…and not everyone can survive its wrath.
I really enjoyed the first two books in the Empyrean series and finished them pretty quickly. While I was a bit late to the hype, I am fully on board now haha. I didn’t realise until shortly before starting book 3 that there were going to be 5 books and that Onyx Storm was likely going to have a cliffhanger.
“To the ones who don’t run with the popular crowd, the ones who get caught reading under their desks, the ones who feel like they never get invited, included, or represented. Get your leathers. We have dragons to ride.”
I feel like there are two camps after reading Onyx Storm, people who loved it and people who are disappointed by the story. After reading the book I wasn’t sure where I felt. I really enjoyed the story, but can also see its flaws.
We explore more of the world in this third book and I really liked that. I always enjoy learning more about a world and we saw a lot! We explore multiple islands and they all had differents cultures and customs. I think this was my favorite part of the story. My other favorite element was Ridoc haha. I have seen way too many TikTok’s about him and my love has only grown.
I think the disappointment for a lot of people came from the fact that it feels like the story hasn’t moved forwards that much. This really feels like a middle book in a series. Hopefully the next book gives us more plot progression. I did still enjoy the book though!
Have you read Onyx Storm? What did you think? And what are your predictions for the next book? I would love to hear from you!
