I have been rereading a LOT lately haha. And one of the things I have been rereading is some old favorites. I have been super curious to see if they would still be as enjoyable this time around. The series I was probably the most curious about was the Raised by Wolves series by Jennifer Lynn Barnes. I remembered it being the best werewolves series ever, would that still be the cases? So I got the audiobooks and last week I listened to all three books. Let’s see how I felt about them!
Raised by Wolves
This was an enjoyable reread for sure but I will say my first thought after finishing it was ‘why did I think this was the best werewolves story?’. I definitely liked some aspects of it, the way Bryn was raised, how the rabid was handled and some of the twists. But I didn’t think it was that great to be honest.
The ‘romance’ between Bryn and Chase was very reminiscent of those classic YA romances from back in the day. I’ve never loved those so I can’t say I’m super invested in the romance. The friendship though, I’m definitely invested in those! There are a ton of interesting relationships in this book, Bryn and the alpha of the pack Callum, Bryn and her adoptive mom, all the other alphas, just to name a few!
Trial by Fire
Once I started this second one I realised I had forgotten basically everything about this second book. I didn’t remember the plot surrounding the psychics at all, so that made it enjoyable and a bit surprising. The twists weren’t super surprising and I did see some of them coming but I did like how they were done. I still wasn’t wow’ed by the book and I was wondering if I build the series up in my mind to something bigger. For years I have been trying to convince everyone to read this series and Jennifer Lynn Barnes other books. Should I reread those as well?
I didn’t love Bryn as a character, she definitely felt like a YA main character. However, that twist at the end and the choice she had to made? That was something I LOVED reading. It also reminded me of why I loved this series. Jennifer Lynn Barnes makes choices that not a lot of writers do, especially not in YA books. And while you might not love what happens, I think it is better for the story!
Taken by Storm
Once again, I had forgotten most of the plot for this final book. And I started to wonder if I even remembered the one thing I thought I knew correctly. Something similar to what I thought would happen, did happen in the second book but with a different outcome. And since this was what had the most impact on my feelings towards the series I was becoming a bit dissapointed.
The plot for this one was fine, I didn’t think it was great to be honest. But it gave us two extremely important moments and they were worth everything to me. First up was everything with Sora, like in the second book Bryn had to make a tough choice and she was about to do the hardest thing. I was really happy with the outcome for this part of the book. The second thing was finding out Shay’s plan and all the consequences. This was the moment I realised that I did in fact remember everything correctly.
I forgot some of the part that lead to Shay’s plan coming to fruition but I never forgot the ultimate consequence. And I have been bawling my eyes out reading this again. While it was incredibly hard to go through again, it was also what I loved about the series and what had me praising this so much. It is a devisive choice by Jennifer Lynn Barnes and I know not everyone loved it, some even hated it. But for me it was perfect, I really liked how it all came together and how all choices led up to that moment. Yes, it was heartbreaking but I hate when everything works out fine all the time, the stakes should be high and there should be a real possibility of losing. I will keep on praising and recommending this series for sure!
Have you read this books? What did you think of them? And did you like the ending? Also, would you be interested in me rereading more old favorites and commenting on them? Let me know in the comments down below!
