Show Sunday | Avatar: the Last Airbender (2024)

A little over a week ago Avatar the Last Airbender was finally released! Of course I immediately binged the whole show haha. I had a week off so I was able to start watching almost as soon as it went online. The big question is; did it live up to my expectations? Let’s take a look!

A young boy known as the Avatar must master the four elemental powers to save the world, and fight against an enemy bent on stopping him.

This new live action show has 8 episodes and most of them are about 50 minutes long. Some are a bit shorter, others a bit longer. They roughly follow the story of the first season of the animated show.

Like I said, I binged the show and watched it all in 2 days. Would’ve been one day if I didn’t have stuff to do haha. And afterwards I really had to process my feelings before I was able to write this ‘review’. Because I just didn’t really know what I thought about it all. And I guess it’s because I didn’t completely love or completely hate it.

Episode 1 was pretty much perfection in my opinion. It showed everything that went down like in the first episode of the animated version. But they did so in an hour-long episode and really went into detail with it. I thought they did a great job. Episode 6 made everything worth it for me, wow wow wow. I love Zuko so so much, as I do uncle Iroh. Episodes 7&8 were pretty good too, very true to the original.

The other episodes were mushing together a lot of different storylines which I didn’t completely love. It was a bit confusing as I kept trying to relate them to the original version. They used things from different seasons and I’m not completely sure why. Also, why didn’t Aang do any waterbending? Book 1 is called water for a reason, would’ve been great if he tried it at least once.

The casting is amazing, the costumes are gorgeous and the visuals are to die for. I really hope we get a season 2&3 because it would be cruel to cancel this. While it’s not the original and there were some changes, overall I really enjoyed it and think it kept the most important things from the original.

The only thing they didn’t keep is Aang being a little kid not wanting the responsibility I would say. And that is unfortunate, as it was one of the things I loved in the original series. It showed Aang being a good person but also him doing everything to not have to ‘be’ the avatar yet. In this new version they moved through the character development really quickly, making it less impressive. And that goes for Aang but also for Zuko. I wish they had taken a bit longer for that, as it was the other thing that made the original so good.

In the end, I did like it a lot and like I said, I do hope we get more seasons. I would love to hear what you thought about it, would you like more seasons? Did you like the changes or did you hate them? Come talk to me in the comments!
