Review | Let’s Get Quizzical – Kelly Ohlert

I’m starting 2024 off strong by working on a few backlist Netgalley books. Getting eARCs is something I’m still very grateful for, but being a mood reader does make it hard to get to them before release day. Yesterday I finished Let’s Get Quizzical and I want to tell you about the book and what I thought. Keep on reading to find out more!

A big thank you to Netgalley and the publisher for providing me with an eARC to read and review.

For fans of Lyssa Kay Adams and Jen DeLuca comes this fresh, funny take on second chances that proves love is anything but trivial.

For family-focused Charlotte, the chance to compete on her favorite trivia game show is a dream come true—the prize money could ensure the best care for her aging grandmother. But when she arrives on set, who does she see among the other contestants? Eli, her high school first love, at least until their shattering breakup. He has his own reasons for competing, not least of which is the stress of multiple jobs, college courses, and a father who has had multiple run-ins with the law.

When the casting department pairs them on a team, both Charlotte and Eli are determined to grit their teeth and make the best of it. That’s easier said than done, of course, and before long a national audience is breathlessly watching them bicker and air years-old grudges. Far from being angry, the program’s producers are ecstatic—the ratings are positively soaring.

As they compete together over several episodes of the show, Charlotte and Eli begin to suspect that old wounds might actually heal. Touring L.A. in their free time has given them the opportunity to get to know each other again—and reawakened feelings that are hard to resist. Until the show’s producers throw a wrench in their hopeful plans that will compromise everything Charlotte and Eli have worked so hard for.

Kelly Ohlert’s warm, witty second novel proves that the best thing to know is always your own heart.

Review

Let’s Get Quizzical was a book that sounded like it was right up my alley. A second chance romance that included our main characters participating on a trivia show? Sign me up! Unfortunately, this one didn’t work out like I was hoping.

This book started off really strong. I loved learning more about Charlotte and Eli. Both of them had reasons to participate on this show and I loved that both of them wanted to do it for family. Both of their families seemed really sweet and I enjoyed the scenes with them in it. Neither of them expected to end up on a team together, but if they wanted the chance at the money they had to keep going.

I completely understand why Charlotte had a hard time trusting Eli, because what happened between them was definitely hurtful. That being said, she did bug me a bit. Of course, Eli had to earn back her trust, but it constantly seemed like if he didn’t think her way on all things that he couldn’t be trusted. I just didn’t like how that felt. I did love seeing them get to know each other all over again and wanting to be around each other. There were a few spicy scenes that the author did well!

Also, I loved that even though we weren’t constantly at the set of the trivia show, we did get some random trivia throughout the book. I thought that was a nice touch. I definitely learned some things that I didn’t know. The ending felt a little bit rushed, but I enjoyed how the author wrapped it all up at the end.

Even though Let’s Get Quizzical didn’t end up being my favorite book, there were definitely some elements I enjoyed. For example the game show side of the story. Would you ever participate on a game show? Or do you watch any? Let me know in the comments. I’d love to hear from you!
