Every year there’s a Goodreads Choice Awards and the first round recently started. I was surprised to see that I haven’t read many of the books nominated this year. A lot are on my TBR, so I’ve decided to talk about a couple of books from each category I read from I hope to pick up soon.
I’m not sure this will happen before the end of the year, but this is part of my Goodreads Choice Awards TBR. Keep on reading to find out what I’m hoping to read!
So I don’t read all genres, but the categories I do enjoy are: romance, romantasy, fantasy, young adult fantasy, young adult ficiton, and mystery & thriller. I’ll take a look at all of these categories and talk about a couple of the books I either own and want to read or I don’t have yet, but I’m really curious about.
Romance
I think out of all the categories, I’ve read the most romance nominees, haha. There are still quite a few on my TBR though.
You, Again – Kate Goldbeck
At first our commitment-phobe and hopeless romantic can’t stand each other. Until they meet years later and become friends, but we all know it’s not going to stay that way. I’ve heard amazing things about You, Again and can’t wait to read it.
The True Love Experiment – Christina Lauren
I’m actually surprised I haven’t read this one yet honestly. Christina Lauren is a favorite author duo of mine and The True Love Experiment sounds like so much fun. Fizzy is a well known and loved romance author, but has never been in love. So why not go on national TV and see if she can find Mr. Right?
Romantasy
I love reading fantasy, so when there’s a mix of romance added in I’m a happy reader. I’ve actually read a few of these, but there are also some series I need to catch up on.
The Ashes and the Star-Cursed King – Carissa Broadbent
I loved The Serpent and the Wings of Night. It wasn’t heavy on the romance, but it definitely started increasing near the end. The world building was very interesting and there were definitely some twists I wasn’t expecting, so I’m excited to see Oraya’s story continue.
A Court This Cruel & Lovely – Stacia Stark
A Court This Cruel & Lovely released in March, but I don’t remember seeing it around. The story sounds really interesting though. Our main character ends up keeping her power in a world that shouldn’t be possible and is supposed to be taken to protect them from the fae. So she makes a deal to help let them in, if they teach her about her powers.
Fantasy
Fantasy is a genre I love, because it’s always interesting to discover new worlds and magic systems. I feel like I haven’t read enough fantasy this year, so hopefully reading these gets me reading more again.
Ink Blood Sister Scribe – Emma Torzs
Ink Blood Sister Scribe is a book I actually bought in June when the boyfriend and I traveled to a new city to visit a bookstore. Two estranged half-sisters are tasked to protect their family’s library of magical books. All I needed to read was that there were magical books. I have a feeling there are going to be some family secrets here.
The Fragile Threads of Power – V.E. Schwab
Earlier this year I read the Darker Shades of Magic, so I could read The Fragile Threads of Magic. I’m excited to read about the characters I’ve come to love in the start of this spin off as well of reading about new characters. This book is almost 600 pages, so I have a feeling we’re getting quite the adventure.
Young Adult Fantasy & Science Fiction
I still read quite a bit young adult, so I really need more time in the day to read, haha.
Powerless – Lauren Roberts
Powerless is the start of a new fantasy series that’s being talked about a lot. This released in the UK first and just released this month in the US. People seem to be comparing this one to The Hunger Games. There seems to be some type of trials, so I can understand the comparison I think.
Delicious Monsters – Liselle Sambury
Last year I loved Liselle’s Blood Like Magic duology, so I was excited when the announcement for Delicious Monsters came. The mansion our main character goes to seems to have some things going on, so we know it’s going to be creepy.
Young Adult Fiction
Besides young adult fantasy, I also enjoy other genres in this age category. I own quite a few of the nominees.
Five Survive – Holly Jackson
Holly Jackson’s A Good Girl’s Guide to Murder trilogy is amazing and Five Survive sounds like another intense read. Our main characters are on a road trip when their RV breaks down and they realize this isn’t a coincidence. I have a feeling this is going to be a book that you can’t put down.
This Time It’s Real – Ann Liang
I don’t know too much about This Time It’s Real, but I know we have fake dating! That’s my favorite trope and makes a book an automatic want to read. After reading the synopsis This Time It’s Real is about a girl who fakes the essay that lands her a dream internship. So she strikes a deal with a guy to be her fake boyfriend.
Mystery & Thriller
These are genres I keep telling myself I’ll read more of. I’ve read quite a few this year, but there are definitely some still on my TBR.
The Only One Left – Riley Sager
Riley Sager is quite a popular thriller author and so far I’ve only read Survive the Night. I didn’t really care for that one, but I’ve heard a lot of people didn’t love that one. The Only One Left is his newest book and takes place in a cliffside mansion where family murders took place.
None of This Is True – Lisa Jewell
None of This Is True was a book I saw everywhere this summer. So much so, I’m definitely intrigued. I love the fact that our main character has her own podcast. That’s an element I love seeing in books. I’ve been wanting to read something by Lisa Jewell for awhile, so this one seems good to start with.
So this is part of my Goodreads Choice Awards TBR. Have you read any of these? What book should I start with? Let me know in the comments. I’d love to hear from you.
I actually had read most of the books in the Romance category. That surprised me, usually there a lot of books I haven’t heard of yet. Made it difficult to pick one.
