Bookish Beginnings on Friday | Where Sleeping Girls Lie – Faridah Àbíké-Íyímídé

We have a lot of eARC’s and we want to promote them a little bit more. So we decided to do some more Bookish Beginnings On Friday. Last week I shared one of my anticipated releases; Where Sleeping Girls Lie. Turned out I was lucky enough to get an eARC of this second book by Faridah Àbíké-Íyímídé. So today I wanted to share my thoughts on the start of the book!

In Where Sleeping Girls Lie — a YA contemporary mystery by Faridah Àbíké-Íyímídé, the New York Times-bestselling author of Ace of Spades — a girl new to boarding school discovers dark secrets and coverups after her roommate disappears.

It’s like I keep stumbling into a dark room, searching for the switch to make things bright again…

Sade Hussein is starting her third year of high school, this time at the prestigious Alfred Nobel Academy boarding school, after being home-schooled all her life. Misfortune has clung to her seemingly since birth, but even she doesn’t expect her new roommate, Elizabeth, to disappear after Sade’s first night. Or for people to think Sade had something to do with it.

With rumors swirling around her, Sade catches the attention of the girls collectively known as the ‘Unholy Trinity’ and they bring her into their fold. Between learning more about them—especially Persephone, who Sade is inexplicably drawn to—and playing catchup in class, Sade already has so much on her plate. But when it seems people don’t care enough about what happened to Elizabeth, it’s up to she and Elizabeth’s best friend, Baz, to investigate.

And then a student is found dead.

The more Sade and Baz dig into Elizabeth’s disappearance, the more she realizes there’s more to Alfred Nobel Academy and its students than she thought. Secrets lurk around every corner and beneath every surface…secrets that rival even her own.

The world was silent when she drowned.
The weight of the stars, of the universe, and of her mind were like an anchor pulling her closer toward oblivion.
As her lungs caught on fire, her vision went black.
And her heart began to slow.
Her final thoughts lingered, wading through the tangled mess of veins and empty, empty space.
And then she whispered the same words they’d later find on the note she’d left:
“I’m sorry.”

Okay I immediately want to keep on reading! And I actually did haha. I adored Ace of Spades by Faridah Àbíké-Íyímídé and I had been looking forward to her second novel as soon as I finished that one. You might understand my expectations for this one haha. Ace of Spades was truly amazing and also really dark. Since this one starts off a bit dark as well I hope (and think) Where Sleeping Girls Lie while be pretty dark too.

I love that this is set at a boarding school, those are some of my favorite bookish locations. We get a little bit of a feel for the writing style in this first bit. I remember enjoying the writing style in Ace of Spades and so far this looks quite enjoyable as well. My expectations have only grown and I just want to dive back in!

Are you excited for this release? What do you think about this start of the book? Does is peak your interest? Let me know in the comments down below!
