TTT #304 | Water

We have been having fun with Top Ten Tuesday, so we decided we will do one every week. This bookish meme was hosted by The Broke and the Bookish, and has been going since June 2010! Since January 2018 Top Ten Tuesday is hosted by That Artsy Reader Girl.

This week’s topic is Water. And I have to say, this didn’t immediately spoke to me. But I decided to go with books that (partly) take place on water. I enjoy reading about pirates so let’s see if I can find 10 books I enjoyed that take place on water. Let’s jump in!

1. The Adventures of Amina al-Sirafi – Shannon Chakraborty

My most recent pirate read! I adored this one a lot, it was amazing reading about a female pirate who was also a mother. The main character wasn’t that young anymore and had to balance being a parent with being a pirate. It was fun and interesting and I can’t wait for the second book in the series.

2. The Dragon Republic – R.F. Kuang

While this doesn’t really count as a pirate book, I would say it has to do with water. The army travels on water multiple times and we see a god that has to do with water. If you’ve read this one, you’ll know why I added it to the list. I really enjoyed this one but this series also broke my heart!

3. To Kill a Kingdom – Alexandra Christo

This was definitely one of the books I thought off right away. Maybe not pirates exactly but this retelling of the Little Mermaid does take place largely on sea. This was another enjoyable read. I haven’t read anything else by this author yet, but I do want to.

4. Daughter of the Pirate King – Tricia Levenseller

Now we get a true pirate novel! And another one with a female pirate as the main character. I really need to continue reading this series, I own the second book and there will be a stand alone third novel releasing in November. It’ll be interesting to see what the author does in this world with a standalone story.

5. A Conjuring of Light – V.E. Schwab

The third book in the Shades of Magic series for sure fits this topic in my opinion. I loved the part on the ship with all the magical stuff, it was the part that convinced me there would be a spinoff series. And I’m currently reading my eARC of that new series <3.

6. Windwitch – Susan Dennard

There are quite some scenes taking place on water in this series but I wanted to go with the second book. I feel like the titular character feels fitting as he always seems to be on a boat in my memory haha. Unfortunately I still haven’t caught up with this series and I hope to remedy that soon.

7. Beauty Queens – Libba Bray

Okay hear me out! This one totally fits haha, the beauty queens are stranded on a deserted island so they are surrounded by the ocean. And at some point there are also pirates at the island! I adore this story, it is hilarious and I love the writing style.

8. House of Sky and Breath – Sarah J. Maas

Soooo there isn’t that much water in this book, but I would say there are 2 important plot points that involve water so it totally fits. I also just love to talk about this book haha. This was such a rollercoaster with cool twists and turns. The ending was amazing and I’m so so excited for the third book in the series.

9. Aquicorn Cove – Kay O’Neill

This is such a gorgeous graphic novel and I want to own everything this author makes. I own another one; The Tea Dragon Society and there are more graphic novels in that series that I need. The art style is beautiful and the story really wholesome. I would highly recommend these books to everyone.

10. Where the Drowned Girls Go – Seanan McGuire

While there isn’t that much water in the book, I would say it fits really well. The main character came from a mermaid portal world so that of course involves water. I did enjoy this one but like a lot of readers I prefer the instalments that completely focus on a portal world.

And those were 10 book that involve water! This was even harder than I thought it would be. I couldn’t find that many pirates books that I’ve read so how. I guess I need to get some more, so if you have any recommendations, let me know down below!
