It’s been amazing seeing more graphic novels being published and with a title like The Princess and the Grilled Cheese Sandwich I couldn’t help but want to know more. So today I’ll be telling you more about this book and the author. Today is my stop on the tour hosted by TBR and Beyond Tours and I have an interview with Deya Muniz to share with you!

The Princess and the Grilled Cheese Sandwich by Deya Muniz
Genre: Young Adult Graphic Novel
Publishing Date: May 9, 2023

A funny, heartfelt YA romance about finding love—and lots of grilled cheese sandwiches—in the place you least expect it, from rising talent Deya Muniz.

Lady Camembert wants to live life on her own terms, without marriage. Well, without marrying a man, that is. But the law of the land is that women cannot inherit. So when her father passes away, she does the only thing she can: She disguises herself as a man and moves to the capital city of the Kingdom of Fromage to start over as Count Camembert.

But it’s hard to keep a low profile when the beautiful Princess Brie, with her fierce activism and great sense of fashion, catches her attention. Camembert can’t resist getting to know the princess, but as the two grow closer, will she able to keep her secret?

A romantic comedy about mistaken identity, true love, and lots of grilled cheese.

Author Interview

What inspired you to write The Princess and the Grilled Cheese Sandwich?

The answer is very cheesy— it was my wife!! We had just started dating & took a scriptwriting class together for Grad School. While brainstorming ideas, we had a funny incident involving an offer of Grilled Cheese Sandwiches for lunch and things went from there! You’ll find a more detailed account of this story at the end of the book.

What has been the favorite part of your publishing journey so far?

Seeing the book in person all printed and put together for the first time was crazy!! I bet that seeing it out in the wild will be three times as crazy. I’m too used to the things I make only ever being online!

If you were a character in The Princess and the Grilled Cheese Sandwich, what kind of character would you be?

“Count” Camembert is already basically me… Except she’s more into fashion… And being the center of attention…And unlike her, I’ve dated boys… And she’s got WAY more money!!

Describe The Princess and the Grilled Cheese Sandwich in five words or less.

Gay Princess Proposes With Sandwich??

What is your favorite quote from The Princess and the Grilled Cheese Sandwich?

“Snitches get Stitches.”

What do you hope readers take away from your story?

I hope they get warm fuzzy feelings & some good laughs out of it!! It would also be nice if this book helped readers find some courage to fight for their own happiness, even if it’s scary!

Could you give us 5 random facts about The Princess and the Grilled Cheese Sandwich (think the story, writing, publishing, anything that comes to mind)?

  • I wrote 85% of the first version of the script in one sitting.
  • Most of the characters are based on friends of mine.
  • There’s a bit where I wanted to use My Chemical Romance song lyrics but had to write my own instead.
  • Zola didn’t exist right until the final version of the story.
  • Gouda is a Bichon Frisé, but she is based on me and my wife’s Cairn Terrier, Ellie. I sketched out the entire book giving her pointy ears like Ellie, only to realize Bichon Frisés have floppy ears.
