Isabelle has done the try a chapter book tag a few times and recently decided to do this with older Netgalley galleys. We started the blog almost 6 years ago and Netgalley was a big rabbit hole when we discovered it.
After a few years, I’m not sure some of these books will be for me anymore, so let’s do a try a chapter tag to see if the first chapters makes me want to read more. I’m trying to increase my ratio and also give books a chance, so this seemed the best way to do it. Let’s take a look at the three books I chose for this week!
The Grey Sisters – Jo Treggiari
The Grey Sisters starts off really intense. We read in the synopsis that best friends D and Spider head into the mountains to deal with their grief two years after a deadly plane crash. What I didn’t expect was reading the chapter about the plane crash. I can’t imagine what it feels like knowing the plan you’re on is going down. After that chapter I definitely want to know more.
The Grace Year – Kim Liggett
Okay, so I didn’t read the whole first chapter. When I chose The Grace Year for this book, I didn’t realize that this book only had 4 chapters. I read 4% before taking a break to write this post. I’ve seen a lot of 5 star reviews for The Grace Year and just reading this bit I definitely get why. I really enjoy the writing and I love that Tierney thinks outside of the box and doesn’t see women as weak. Being married isn’t something she wants. I have a feeling this book is going to make me angry, but that it’ll be worth it.
Heartwood Box – Ann Aguirre
The first line of Heartwood Box is definitely interesting: “This is where hope goes to die.” Araceli is sent to live with her great aunt and I’m already getting creepy vibes. When she arrives to the train station there’s nothing around it, but she sees missing people posters everywhere. It seems that people just vanish (including her aunt’s husband). She has some online friends and one just happens to live in this town? Things are going to get interesting. I definitely want to read more.
So I’ve read another three first chapters from my Netgalley backlist. This week’s try a chapter didn’t help me much when it comes to shrinking my TBR, but I do know that I want to read these three books soon. What do you think of these three books? Which one should I start first? Let me know in the comments!
