Hunterland by Dana Claire
Genre: Young Adult Fantasy
Publishing Date: February 7, 2023

Liam Hunter has warded off hungry vampires, slayed monstrous beasts, and put agonized spirits to rest since he was old enough to hold a stake. When trouble comes through the Hunterland message board, the Hunter family hits the road. Nurses are dying at high schools across Wisconsin in a string of fishy so-called suicides, and the trail leads to Falkville Falls High, where Liam clashes with Olivia Davis, whose maddening family seems inexplicably embroiled in this haunting mess. Liam deals with monsters, not people. Things just got more complicated. Can Liam find out who or what is responsible before the next murder, or will this vicious death cycle have no end?

With only their father to care for them, Olivia Davis has always mothered her little sister, Pepper. But when the Hunter family opens her eyes to the hidden underworld of real monsters lurking in the dark, she realizes she can’t protect Pepper from this newest threat alone. She’ll have to join forces with the wayward boy who irritates her the most to take down a monster that’s too close to home. That’s if her own family doesn’t stand in her way.

Author Interview

What inspired you to write Hunterland?

My love of shows like Buffy the Vampire Slayer, The Originals, Teen Wolf, and Supernatural all played a role in creating Hunterland. I remember telling my editor one day how much I missed them, and she said, “so you’re a writer. Create a world that brings you back to that nostalgic place.” And boy was she right! Hunterland—out of all the books I have written—felt like a magical unicorn for me. I saw the book in my head and the words just flowed from there to my fingertips. My goal was to bring people back to their supernatural roots and considering the advance praise, it looks like I hit my mark!

How was writing this book different than your previous books?

This is the first book I pitched to a publisher and had picked up. I self-published my previous works. Both traditional and self-publishing have their pros and cons. I think it’s important to establish what your objective is as a writer. For me, I love having the experience of both. Working with a publisher has opened doors for me, I might not have had the opportunity to go through without them but self-publishing has allowed for me to use my twenty years in marketing and branding to design covers and create worlds that ring true to my vision without having to adjust for a team of editors. With that being said, I’m beyond grateful for my publisher for believing in Hunterland and providing me with the chance to work with a literary team and backing my original concepts. For each decision I’ve made, I’ve thought it through and have been very happy with my direction.

What has been your favorite part of your publishing journey so far?

My favorite part has been interacting with fans. The feedback and reviews from the book tours I’m in have been so incredibly supportive that I wish I could prep for a book launch all time. I love getting videos, posts, pictures and reviews from my very creative fans and using their content to share with others. Hands down my favorite part of the process is having the honor and opportunity to interact with my readers. You guys are the best!!!

If you were a character in Hunterland, what kind of character would you be?

Hmmmm, great question. I think I’d like to be from the Hunterland London branch as a monster hunter. One of the things I love most about this series is not only can it be drawn out since it’s written episodically, but there are also many ways to do a spin off staying in this world but focusing on new characters. At the end of the book, two sisters from the London branch are introduced. I think if I could jump into the series, I’d like to be from their location and take over the hunts in the UK.

Do you have a favorite quote from this book?

“We had found sanctuary in each other’s arms in the last couple of weeks and although I couldn’t promise her any type of a future, I could make the most of our present.”

  • Liam

I think this is a great line that sums up the main two characters and their relationship in a life-or-death romance fighting monsters. No one could ever predict what their future is like when living in such a dangerous supernatural world. I like that Liam is honest about that rather than living in a fantasy about how they could run off into the sunset.

Could you give us five random facts about Hunterland (writing, research, anything really)?

  1. Hunterland is my first traditionally published work.
  2. The secret online community called Hunterland was established in London because of the song, Werewolves of London.
  3. The underlining theme here is about mothers. It wasn’t until a producer read my book and provided analysing feedback that I realized the loss of my mother played a huge role in the way Liam feels about his own mother dying. My mom didn’t get eaten by a werewolf, so don’t panic. But she did die in front of me, and I couldn’t save her. I think subconsciously the loss of my mother to cancer plays a huge role in my writing. I also believe her love and support of my craft is what propels me forward. She’s an inspiration to me always.
  4. I intentionally wrote Hunterland episodically because I saw this going to TV or film.
  5. In each book I write there is an easter egg associated with my mother and/or myself. The two easter eggs in this book are the following:
  • I had an obsession with ketchup that my friends used to poke fun of me about. At any given point you could walk into my home and there’s be at least four large bottles. I have however given ketchup up as of last year after I found out the sugar content. Liam carries my obsession in this book since I no longer carry it in real life. 😉
  • The story takes place in Wisconsin. My mother was born there, and I always include something personal about her in my works. I hope that she knows these little details in my writing are not so little in my heart.
