Bookish Item | Goodreads Choice Awards Winners

Yesterday the winners from the Goodreads Choice Awards have been announced. I thought it would be fun to take a look at the winners and see if I have read them, want to read them, are now interested or still wouldn’t want to read them haha. There are 17 categories so let’s jump in!

Fiction:

Tomorrow, and Tomorrow, and Tomorrow – Gabriella Zevin
now interested

I hadn’t heard of this one before to be honest. But I love that it incorporates gaming and it looks like it has great reviews. There is also going to be a movie. And I love the cover haha.

Mystery & Thriller:

The Maid – Nita Prose
now interested

Another one I hadn’t heard before, and also another one that is going to be a movie haha. This is a locked room mystery and I really enjoy those. Hopefully it has a satisfying ending, but I have high hopes based on the win.

Historical Fiction:

Carrie Soto is Back – Taylor Jenkins Reid
on the fence

I’m not surprised this one won, Taylor Jenkins Reid is a very popular author. While I loved the books I’ve read by her, I’ve also seen a lot of critique recently that I hadn’t thought about before. TJR is a white woman and she is writing about POC main characters, she is applauded for it but POC writers hardly get any opportunities. This is put very bluntly and there are people who can explain it a lot better. But it means I’m not sure right now, I was definitely interested in the story but I’m not sure I can support it.

Fantasy:

House of Sky and Breath – Sarah J. Maas
read

I always feel bad for the other authors in this category whenever there is a Sarah J. Maas book. She has so many fans and even ones that haven’t read the book might vote for it. It’s also why I decided to vote for another book even though I loved this one. I can’t wait for the book in the series and I’m debating rereading everything.

Romance:

Book Lovers – Emily Henry
not interested

I’m simply not a big romance reader and wouldn’t really pick this one up. If I do pick up a romance novel I don’t think this would be the one either.

Science Fiction:

Sea of Tranquility – Emily St. John Mandel
now interested

I have been interred in Emily’s Station Eleven for years, but have yet to pick it up. While I hadn’t heard of her newest release yet, I have now added it to my Goodreads shelves. I love a good science fiction novel and this one has time travel and lunar colonisation. Sounds pretty cool to me!

Horror:

Hidden Pictures – Jason Rekulak
not interested

Honestly, there is just no way I’m picking up an adult horror novel haha. I can deal with MG horror stories but I still have nightmares from the YA horror I read. So no thank you.

Humor:

The Office BFF’s – Jenna Fischer & Angela Kinsey
not interested

This is written by two actors from the show The Office and since I haven’t seen that show I’m not really interested. It’s just not for me.

Nonfiction:

Atlas of the Heart – Brené Brown
not interested

I read only a very select few non-fiction books and this one just isn’t for me. My choice was Why Has Nobody Told Me This Before, the nonfiction book I’m currently (slowly) reading. I love books about psychology and I have added some interesting books that were nominated.

Memoir & Autobiography:

I’m Glad My Mom Died – Jennette McCurdy
not interested

This book won by a landslide! And I’m not surprised at all. But this was isn’t for me either. I don’t read that many autobiographies and to be honest I don’t really care about Jennette, I hardly knew who she was.

History & Biography:

Bad Gays – Huw Lemmey & Ben Miller
not interested

Another category I hardly read from, and this one doesn’t intrigue me. But I do have to say I added 4 nominees to my Goodreads shelves. They sound super interesting and I might just pick them up at some point.

Graphic Novels & Comics:

Heartstopper volume 4 – Alice Oseman
read

I loved this one! And I also am not surprised this one won. All 4 volumes have been amazing and I can’t wait for the next one. Although I’m super sad that will be the last one. Luckily we also have the Netflix show to enjoy.

Poetry:

Call Us What We Carry – Amanda Gorman
want to read

I own Amanda’s book version of her inaugural poem and I love it. This is definitely a poetry collection I want to read. I haven’t read that many poetry but I have found a couple I do enjoy. It’s been a while since I picked one up, maybe I should do so again soon.

Debut Novel:

Lessons in Chemistry – Bonnie Garmus
want to read

This one sounds really good and I definitely want to read it. It’s a historical fiction, is supposed to be really funny and I think it will have a really good message. The reviews have been pretty good and it looks like there will be a movie.

Young Adult Fiction:

The Final Gambit – Jennifer Lynn Barnes
read

YAY! This is the one I voted for in this category. I love this series and I loved this conclusion to it. Jennifer Lynn Barnes is a favorite author of mine and I’m so happy she is getting the recognition she deserves.

Young Adult Fantasy & Science Fiction:

Gallant – V.E. Schwab
currently reading

I’m actually still reading this eARC, oops. V.E. Schwab is another favorite author of mine and I’m so happy she won. I really need to finish reading this book, I enjoyed it so far. And I can’t wait for V.E.’s next book!

Middle Grade & Children’s:

I am Quiet: A Story for the Introvert in all of us – Andie Powers
now interested

That title has me interested right away. I am an introvert myself and I would love to see how it is explained to younger children. Hopefully more children can see themselves in this story and don’t feel like they need to be more outgoing.

This was so much fun to look at! And I have found some books I now want to read. What did you think of the winners? Have you found any new books to add to your shelves? Let me know in the comments!
