Silver in the Mist by Emily Victoria
Genre: Young Adult Fantasy
Publishing Date: November 1, 2022
Eight years ago, everything changed for Devlin: Her country was attacked. Her father was killed. And her mother became the Whisperer of Aris, the head of the spies, retreating into her position away from everyone… even her daughter.
Joining the spy ranks herself, Dev sees her mother only when receiving assignments. She wants more, but she understands the peril their country, Aris, is in. The malevolent magic force of The Mists is swallowing Aris’s edges, their country is vulnerable to another attack from their wealthier neighbor, and the magic casters who protect them from both are burning out.
Dev has known strength and survival her whole life, but with a dangerous new assignment of infiltrating the royal court of their neighbor country Cerena to steal the magic they need, she learns that not all that glitters is weak. And not all stories are true.

Interview
What inspired you to write Silver in the Mist?
For this book, it started with the idea of making this dangerous magical force that eventually became the Mists and that was slowly spreading over the continent. Then I built the whole world of the book (Devlin’s world of spies, Alyse’s world of magical casters, and the two different countries—one that was “safe” and one that was dying) up around that.
World-building is one of my favorite aspects of writing, so I often start with the world of the story first and then populate it with characters.
What has been your favorite part of your publishing journey so far?
I love the connections that I’ve found in the book community. It’s been amazing meeting other writers and meeting other readers both virtually and in-person. This community is so vibrant and welcoming, and it’s so lovely being a part of it on the writer side as well as the reader side.
Another thing that I’ve absolutely loved is seeing my covers and the character art that has been made from my stories. It’s so amazing seeing my worlds and characters come to life in a visual form.
If you were a character in Silver in the Mist, what kind of character would you be?
I think I’d be a magical caster. I’d like to say I’d be a spy, but I do not think I’m subtle enough or have a good enough poker face for that. It would be so cool being able to use magic though!
What is your favorite quote from Silver in the Mist?
I really like the quote, “Burn the Rules.” I also like Alyse’s quote, “My hope is the strongest thing about me”, because I relate to that a lot.
What do you hope readers take away after reading this book?
I hope that readers take away a sense of their own inner strength and also that we’re so strong when we work together.
Could you give us 5 random facts about Silver in the Mist (think the story, writing, publishing, anything that comes to mind)?
- Devlin is aroace and there is also non-binary and lesbian representation in the book.
- The Mists is a malevolent magical force with monsters of silvered lightning in it that cuts the continent in two.
- There are two countries in the book. One is heavily influenced by invention and science. The other by art and beauty.
- The book includes no romance.
- Despite having Silver in the title and my first book having Golden in the title, the two books aren’t related at all.
